Need help with awful switch wiring

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

Nah I was still wrong. I'm done messing with it for today, the Import switch has me pulling my hair out. I have a tone on position 5 of the 5 way, somehow my middle tone is only affecting the bridge pickup, the neck tone only works on the middle, and the neck has no tone. Turning one tone down on position 4 results in the other one working.

should be correct now.jpg
This is how it's wired at the moment. I have no idea what I did wrong at this point. Should just be standard strat wiring.

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

Yeah that's my issue here too. I guess I'll go buy a new one and junk that thing, thanks anyway sir.

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

Post a pic of the one you have...maybe someone has seen it, or maybe it can help someone else in the future.

7 pin import switch.

I already gave up and ordered an oak grigsby to replace it, but that doesn't mean that I'm not still angry at it and want to figure out how it should have been wired.

Use the continuity tester in your multi-meter to map out the connections. It may take a little time. Other option would be to trace the connections on the other side of the switch if you can see them but then I'd still test them out to make sure I got it right.

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

Based on your description of its behavior, the two sides are opposite, like a rotary switch. So what you have marked as B N M, if it were 1-2-3, the other side would be 3-2-1. The turning down one tone and the other works is a problem with how the two are bridged, so changing the switch won't fix that one.

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

Yup, I am not sure why the middle one is connected to any of the other ones, it's the common for the whole thing and can by itself be connected to the volume pots input. Other then that, that switch is set up like beaubrummels said, like a rotary, so the middle of three is the same, but then the other two effect each other, but as opposites on each side. So, spot 1 and 3 are paired, 2 and 2 (middle) are paired, then 3 and 1 are paired, with that center lug being the common for the whole shebang.

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

I un-soldered the grounds across each pot and moved them over an inch, and yanked the jumper. It solved all of my problems. The switch however feels clunky now and as I have a replacement coming, I will rewire it cleanly this time.

The switch wasn't the issue, it was my own stupidity and I appreciate the help.

The jumper was something I found on strat-talk when I looked up the switch via reverse image search and assumed they knew what they were doing.

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

Wow, that is strange...as said, it reminds me of a rotary switch.

Re: Need help with awful switch wiring

Yeah, I got one of those for cheap off of ebay once, but I used it as a 2 pickup 3 way switch. Needless to say it was a bit puzzling at first.
