to do this i need to upgrade to a cabinet instead of this crap ss combo i got. a good cab. so my question, since i'm cheap, is can i hook up my me-50 without a head and will it sound ok? thatnks in advance for the help.

:headbang:

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

As far as I know the ME-50 doesn't have a speaker out so you'll probably need a power amp too. That probably won't be as cheap as getting a small tube combo but then again you said you want power.

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

you still need something to drive the cabinet...the ME-50 can't do it. Gotta have an amp of some kind

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

But the ME-50 doesn't even have amp modelling so I'd look into a small tube combo (the power may surprise you for the specs) a 15 watt tube amp should be fine for smaller gigs and can be miked for bigger ones (as gigs needing this volume would usually have the amps miked anyway)

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

oh, wack. not the answer i wanted to hear. well, i have been contemplating some small tube combos but the prices are really high. i been thinking a roadster, but $ drives me away (no pun inteded). and i am worried about cheaper tube amps because of the lesser quality speakers in them. what do you guys recommend? i think the amp won't matter much-just the tubes for power and sound quality, and good speakers that can get loud. but i'd also like the bass of a 4x12. i guess i have to sacrifice something with less money.

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

Speakers don't cost that much if you find a cheaper good amp and don't like the speakers you can change them and still save alot of money compared to paying for an expensive amp based on the speakers

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

i would try a new higher wattage and more efficient speaker before you go crazy with anything else

I'm with Jeremy.

I'd like to propose a twist though.

The FM isn't a horrible amp. If youe serious about getting a halfstack, get a 4x12 cab you like the sound of and just run the FM through there until you get the scratch together for a quality head. When you get the head, rock it through the cab and retire the FM. :burnout:

Good advice there.

An inexpensive yet good head could be somehting along the lines of a Peavey Windsor or Valve King.

For that matter a Carvin Legacy isn't huge $$$ either.

yes! i was thinking about that, but i didn't find a speaker out there either. so, how would i do it? and your right, it isn't a horrible amp, i like it but i can't get it to get that loud (drummer plays loud!). it cuts through, but not as clearly as i think it should. unless it is not my amp, but the acoustics of the small garage with tile floor.

good idea as well.....
what speakers you recommend? i know the celestions vintage 30s and gt-somethin'-75's are popular.

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

what type of tone do you want? eminence makes a great line of loud and high power handling speakers that are american made and less expensive than even the chinese made celestions. v30 = about $120 vs. emi wizard = $85

Re: need more power and still stay clear!

thick, heavy, tight, tone that cuts. and i'd like good cleans and better dirt.

the governor or the tonker might work well for ya. both are loud and thick sounding, not overly bright
