The current crap I'm using is basic as hell, slow, and only has 4 tracks available to record on. I dunno why...lazy bastard designers. On top of that, it only saves as a WAV file. Anyone know of any good, 8+ track recording software that saves as an MP3 and is free??

cool edit pro 2.0! i have a "borrowed" copy. 128 tracks. dunno what it saves as (pretty sure not mp3, never got that far lol), but i can try to send you the prog if you want it.

Yeah, I also have a "borrowed" copy of Cool Edit Pro 2. You can save each track or the whole mixdown in several format, inlcuding MP3.

Very cool actually, fairly simple, no frills, but effective.

Re: Need New Recording Software (free!!)

If your desire is to create an original work, using multiple parts that you perform, then you don't want software that will save in anything other than wav. Even Cool Edit/Adobe Audition converts an mp3 that it opens, to wav on-the-fly. With, a subsequent loss of fidelity on every open/save pass.

You should do everything associated with your song in wav format, from recording to processing to final mixdown, and then as the very last step, when all else is complete - convert to mp3.

Even then, I always keep the original mix in wav, also.

Re: Need New Recording Software (free!!)

Totally agree with Artietoo... there is a definite loss in MP3... but the advantage of saving in this format is for a project like the Cyberjam, where you want to send your part to someone else in a smaller form.

I rarely convert the final files in MP3 myself (and never the various part of a song), since the bits I record stay in my PC or end up burnt on a CD when I want to hear what they sound like on a Hi-Fi.

There is also a small freeware called Blaze Mediaconvert which converts audio and video files in different formats. Don't have the link but feed the name into Google and you should find it easily.
