Need Tele Recommendation

I'm there yet again. Gassing for a Tele.

I'm very spoiled with my custom shop Strat. Perfect in every way.

So let's say I'm after that sort of standard but not really wanting to drop custom shop cash.

What Tele should I be looking at? Any brand will do. Looking for great bang for the buck. Willing to drop &1000 or so.

Thoughts?

If you want a great Tele w/o spending a ton get an AVRI 52. It'll run you over a grand but not too much.

Re: Need Tele Recommendation

People drop used warmoth and usacg builds on ebay occasionally, I imagine a good USACG tele with a setup could be nice. If you don't mind the aged look there's a ton on ebay around 7-800

I've heard good things about precision guitar's les paul kits, but idk how good their telecaster kits are:

Maybe you could find someone to do the work of putting it together and finishing it - I figure that way it'll be around $1000 with parts and labor.

I don't have much experience with custom shop instruments, but my #1 is a parts telecaster that was right around $700 when it was all said and done and is about as good a guitar as I've gotten to play.

The new revised American Vintage series are amazing quality and detail.

But really, the American Standards are very good. If you get a pre-2012 model just pop in some new pickups and you're good to go.

without question the Fender Duncan loaded 52 Hot Rod Tele ,albeit just a bit outside the target range of a grand at around $1300.00.;

Got a used '52 RI tele myself last year. Great guitar if you can get used to the smaller vintage fret style. They'll be within budget if you can find a used one.

Re: Need Tele Recommendation

I wouldn't hesitate to get a Fender Classic Player Baja for eight bills and switch out a few components to taste.

The first thing you have to decide is what fretboard radius you're willing to live with. Some may argue otherwise, but to me it makes a tremendous difference. The Baja is 9-1/2" which suits me fine. The last MIM Tele I bought had the best neck/fret job straight out of the box of any guitar I have purchased.

It is also furnished with a four-way switch which, IMO, no Tele should be without.

Edit: The only downside is the gloss urethane finish. I really prefer lacquer.

Edit II: All that said, my first choice would be to buy the neck and body from Tommy at USAG, buy the hardware you want where the prices are right, and assemble it or have it assembled for you. Then have a pro set-up job done on it. That will probably land just a little on the high side of $1.1G, but the results will likely be worth it.

Re: Need Tele Recommendation

I have a Warmoth build Tele that I'm extremely happy with. I spent a little over a grand on it, but that included professional assembly/setup, plus I have "exotic" woods in the neck/fb that cost a bit more than a standard maple or maple/rosewood one would cost. If you can find what you want in their showcase you can save a lot. Here's mine:

Re: Need Tele Recommendation

Fender finally has OEM necks and bodies available. I say build yourself and get the features you truly want.
