New Amp Day- EVH 5150 III 50 watt

Re: New Amp Day- EVH 5150 III 50 watt

I've used the full size EVH 3 for rehearsals for about a year.

great tone!

the right cab does wonders too.

I've wanted to run it through a rectifier cab or orange cab to see what happens in terms of bass.

Rectifier and Orange cabs have Vintage 30's, and I've heard they're a bot on the harsh/ bright side, nothing a little adjustment of the tone controls doesn't fix.

On the 50 watters they added a Resonance control on the back, which helps the bass and low end alot

I love V30's. They are rude, forceful and unapologetic.
Players regularily state GB's are really the best fit for the III though.
I would use V30's myself personally.

Want.

I think I feel a replacement for my JCA coming up soon depending on how well my band keeps doing. but I don't know if I could take the drop of going 100 to 50 watt. i know the db level drop is usually minor. I've considered 6505's but EVERYONE I've played with has one. Seems like it's a staple for any kind of heavy tone. do do these run just 6l6's?

Yuppers. Maybe look into a 6534+. Not many people have those.
Not sure I want another 50 watter. It isn't a volume thing. I just find my tone is always BIGGER sounding with a 100 watter.

I agree with you on the wattage issue. I like the 6534+, I don't know if i love it though. I may go for a v3 also if i can get a good deal on one.

I've been the "got to be 100w" guy for like 20 years now, the 50w 5150 III changed my mind. It's awesome.

Well broken in V30's are really, really good, and I'm sure they would rock with the 5150 III.

V30's takes a LOT of time to break in, but when they do the harshness disappears and there's plenty awesome sounding punch to be had.

Avatar speakers sells Hellatones, which are broken in Celestions

Me TOO!! But.... But for a 6505! I played either a 5150 or a 6505 once and LOVEd that thick gooey gain..

Plus, Id rather give my money to PV

What drove me to buy the EVH was I tried the Peavey 6505+ 1x12 with my PRS before I bought my PRS, and it sounded like the perfect amp for that guitar- and the amp was affordable at $599, but I didn't like how the amp was almost as huge as the huge 2x12 combo. The Peavey also had a dark syrupy tone that could be dialed in on the EVH but can't be dialed out of the Peavey and many modern amps. Both are alot fo fun to play.

With my other amps I'd have to dial in a good tone for one guitar, and readjust everything if I switched guitars- not so with the EVH, I've having more fun juggling around my other guitars and seeing the tones I can get out of each now- the Jackson Soloist with Bill Lawrence XL-500 sounds pure evil

Re: New Amp Day- EVH 5150 III 50 watt

Yeah It all comes down the players own needs. If you want more versatility, then the III is likely better than the 6505 for you.
Myself, I generally only play clean and mean, and I also have choice when playing my amps.
I got away from using so many guitars too. I've begun selling off axes because of the problem you mentioned. Each one sounds different and your eq settings need changing from amp to amp. I have two guitars that sound very similar, so I'm set.
