New Amp Day!

While out fishing today, my buddy calls and says he's at a bar where they're having a benefit for a local that passed. He's says their having a silent auction with a nice Les Paul guitar with no bids. Starting at $400. Told him to send me pics. Well, it had a bolt on neck and said Gibsun, so I told him thanks for the heads up. He doesn't know a lot about instruments, but cool he's keeping an eye out for me.

Then I take a closer look at the pic and notice a corner of a Tweed looking amp. I call him right back and ask what's up with the amp? He walks over to it and tells me what it says, Fender Deluxe Reissue, and in the listing it said Celestion Gold. I asked how many bids, he says none. Starts at $300. I told him to put my name on it and I'll be there before 6:00, when the auction ends.

So I get there at 5:45, he's gone, but I'm still the only bidder. I patiently watch the clip board, talking to the people hounding over the Chibson. Trying to keep people's interest off of "My amp".

Bam! Its mine! Talking to some volunteers and security, I found out they intend to call all the high bidders tomorrow morning. A little sweet talking with the head lady (owner of the bar's wife), explaining I was the only bidder, she let me take it home.

Oh that guitar went for $900. A cheap squire Infinity with a Hard Rock Cafe sticker and Michael McDonald's autograph went for $550.

Have only played through it for 30 minutes or so, but I'm very impressed with this amp.

It has no rips or tears, but there's some smudge prints on the tweed. What would be the best way to try to clean the tweed?

The pic that started it all. It is a pretty nice looking guitar.

Yeah, the guitar does look nice but you walked away with the nice item... I'm not very litterate on fender amp models so which is it?

Re: New Amp Day!

Awesome deal on that amp!

I have the USA one from the 90s that I've modded and I absolutely love it. I have an Eminence Texas Heat in mine. Haven't tried the Celestion Gold but I bet it is a great combo!

Enjoy!

Re: New Amp Day!

Congratulations with your new amp Swampy! You scored a very, very good deal there! Have fun with it mate! :fing2: Weird that nobody else put a bid in for this amp, it sure was a bargain at 300 dollar!!

Re: New Amp Day!

As for cleaning tweed, I've never done it...liked the dirty/aging look it gets.

But here are two threads about it 1. & 2.

Re: New Amp Day!

Screw cleaning it. Crank it up jam out some Blackfoot or Little Feat and move on.

You know, its kind of ironic, I won this auction at a bar where Rickey Medlocke lives close to, and has been seen at. When I asked someone if they knew who donated the amp, they said they're not really allowed to say. Hmmm, could it be? Is that his stamp? Eh, probably not.

Re: New Amp Day!

Well, I like Tweed for how it ages...so I'd leave it and just let be part of the character of the amp.

BUT...tis not my amp ;) I would think some light detergent and water should do the trick. Maybe try a small dot of Dawn Dish Washing Detergent, I've had great luck with that getting stains out with that.

Re: New Amp Day!

Right!
When my friend said Celestion Gold, I knew that was a $250+ speaker, new.

Yeah, it's a great deal. If you like the Gold in the amp, at $300 it's a huge win. If you want to swap for an Eminence, like maybe a Texas Heat (just an example), it's still a killer deal even if you hang on to the Gold. Swap an Eminence in there, like it better and then sell the Gold and you basically paid $200 for the amp. You can't lose. I'm jealous. :p
