New amp purchase... feeling nervous

Open lane

Ealier today i purchased a new amp. There were 3 amps “in the running,” which were the super sonic, the princeton... and the 68 twin reverb.

I ended up going w/ the twin reverb. 85watts scares the living doodoo out of me, but it seems like 9 out of 10 posts i read surfing the forums on the topic say that it will sound good at bedroom levels.

Feeling a bit nervous as i wait to get it.

Anyone with positive or negative experiences with this amp at bedroom levels?

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

I have 2 of those at home and 2 in the studio.

Twin is too heavy, too loud, too everything for home IMO. one of the best amps for clean and making textured walls of sound -but really not needed unless you are playing moderate to large clubs. good luck getting it to 2 on the volume.. :lmao: sometimes the twin hates certain pedals.

Deluxe Reverb is the best for pedals (especially the SIlverface), versatility, recording, and honestly you'll struggle to get it over 3 on the volume also -it's considered and called the "Desert island amp" of the Fenders -in that you get most of everything Fender in one amp.

The Princeton is great for home and small clubs. -also dynamite for recording -I'm not sure which speaker comes in it now -that overwhelmingly affects the sound and whether it does 1 amazing thing or multiple. it's #2 behind the Deluxe in the Fenderist of Fendery Fenders.

Super sonic has channel switching and that high gain -so it's a simplified Deluxe Reverb with higher gain -good for playing out in small to medium clubs and good with pedals -and your also struggle to get it over 3 -Killer gigging amp -it has a special speaker -which has a more distinct voicing -so a little less versatile but does IT'S thing!

It has a master volume yeah?
I love the sound of a big Fender amp, its what they do best if you ask me - big fat juicy clean tones. The circuit is one thing, but 2x12 and a big open cab is great. And then there's that amazing reverb and tremelo!
If you're wanting to push it hard for tone then your neighbours are gonna hate you, but if you're ok with reasonable volume levels you'll be fine.

FWIW, I have a late 70's SF Pro Reverb and I live in an apartment. I never wind it right up, but I get lots of sweet sound outta it that no other amp can do. The DRRI and PRRI amps do sound great, but they don't quite get the big sound of the Pro Reverb, or a Twin - for obvious reasons.

Go big or go home! :)

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

I use an old Super Reverb at home. Sure, it sounds better when I can get it up to around 7 or 8, but it still sounds good at low volume. I know with the Super, I pulled the preamp tube for the first channel, and used it in the Phase Inverter spot, and it gets it to break up at lower volumes. I'm not sure if this also works with a Twin, but I'm sure there are tricks.

Another one that will work with any amp is run a drive pedal in front with the amp wide open but the volume on the pedal turned almost all the way down. It's not the same as cranking up the amp by itself, but I think it sounds better than running the amp really low.

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

Yeah, man. I plan the push it with a pedal of some sort, not expecting a lot of early breakup. I got the 68 version on purpose to use the “custom (bassman tonestack)” channel for pedals. I really think if i didn’t pull the trigger on the twin reverb this time around i’d haunt myself with “what ifs”

If it’s really unmanageable, i’ll return it. But after reading some success stories, hey, we’ll see!

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

With classic (non-Master Volume) Fender amps, ask where on the volume knob you want to run the amp and how loud you want it to be. I can run my 70’s Princeton Reverb at low volumes as a clean and pedal platform amp, or louder and use the guitar’s volume to clean up playing with a drummer.

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

These days, anything with a lot of weight scares me. As long as I didn't have to carry it, it would be an awesome amp to have. Congrats!

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

Thanks, man. Yeah, there is no way i’d be able to lift it. I already spoke with my (big) brother and he’s gonna be over the day i get it to help make sure i’m situated. Once it’s in the spot i picked out - it’s staying planted!

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

My Mesa Road King is like that. It sounds great but way too heavy to move. 98lbs! At least it has casters.

I went to lift an AC30 at a GC a few years ago. BAM, soon as I did my back bit the dust

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

that ac30 is about the same weight as the twin. twins are great clean amps at almost any volume. 85w is a lot for a bedroom amp but itll be fine

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

I played mine in the bedroom for years you will be fine and it will sound great. Congrats on the new amp.

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

You have a 2x12 road king? That's an awesome, yet immovable amp.

Yes, lately it moves when I do. (Move to a different house) I use the Princeton Reverb or head plus 2x12” cabinet with the band since they are so much easier to move. At least it’s not Bruce’s Quad Reverb.

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

Well, the amp got here. It sounds glorius. Not “scary loud.” I can crank it to about 3.5 til stuff in my room starts to rattle. Awesome amp!

The thing takes pedals real well. I used to use a hermida zendrive pedal into a marshall class 5. A couple of years ago, i replaced my class5 with a dsl40c. I never liked the ZD through the dsl. I had contemplated selling the ZD. So glad i kept it, now. Sounds absolutely stunning through the twin reverb custom 68.

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

Glad you're liking it dude, they're amazing amps. If you're able to play loud every now and then you'll appreciate having an amp that just sounds sweeter the more you wind it up, but still stands up beautifully dialed down.

Re: New amp purchase... feeling nervous

It’s funny because i thought that when i was playing yesterday either something in my room was rattling, or a tube. As it turned out, it was just the amp’s kickstand! Go figure!
