New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

Wattage

High Voltologist
I love it and I think it is an absolutely gorgeous guitar. I wasn't going to get a flame top originally but it looks so sweet I had to do it. The guitar is a chambered semi-hollow mahogany body with a satin finish flame maple cap, super clean routing and immaculate wiring, CTS pots, factory "high sensitivity" FilterTron pups, ebony board, Gretsch die-cast tuners (I imagine they are branded Gotohs), BadAss stop/bridge and a zero fret, it looks to be made 10-20-03. I've never owned a zero fret guitar before, it's kind of cool - I don't even notice it when playing but I imagine it brightens the tone up a bit. The notes just sparkle coming off of this thing.

Looks sweet from what I can tell bro....the pic is HUGE, and a little fuzzy. ***EDIT...looks like you re-sized...much better.

Take a couple more pics and post them. I'd like to see the zero fret, and a shot of the whole guitar.

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

that is 1 of my dream guitars .... i really like the 1 pickup version over the 2 pickups.... no switches in your way.... it is chambered but is it very heavy?

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

i LOVE filtertrons

as soon as i get my electromatic hollowbody, well, thats the first thing thats going on

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

It is really light but still feels soild if that makes any sense. It is a breeze to play even though it has kind of smallish frets which I don't normally go for but for some reason it just feels right on this guitar. It has a 12" radius board so bends and all work out well, I really love it. In a lot of ways it reminds of the newer Les Paul DC model meets an old DC Jr. but the FilterTrons get it a wholly different sound.

It is hard to see in the pic but the top is a solid flametop not a veneer. It's pretty cool looking at it from the inside.

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

The fretwork is perfect, crowned and polished like a pro would setup. The bridge is fine, it is a standard issue BadAss as far as I can tell. I have had them before, good solid no frills piece of metal.

I think that I like the top so much because the guitar is so simple. It looks so much nicer in person, and the satin top has a plus I didn't consider - no fingerprints!

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

Man, I like it even better with the flametop, only because it dresses up an otherwise utilitarian axe. I'd love to have that thing, and I know what the first thing Id do is....

Make sure one guy in the band is playing THAT, and the other is playing an SG or LP.
It's my lifelong dream to hear that AC/DC sound and have it be 100% authentic.
A few weeks ago, I jammed with an AC/DC Tribute band that had a singer that sounded EXACTLY like Brian Johnson. They woulda sh!t if I brought that guitar into the room.

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

yeah I hear ya. I figure since I am the only guitar player and I am blessed with multiple personalities I can be both Malcolm and Angus :burnout:

My buddy Chris sounds like Bon and Brian's bastard love child. The Malcolm in his band has 2 of them, man he sounds dead on. I play like Mal a lot anyway so I figured I would just finish it off

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

Yeah I would think that the pup is a keeper. I haven't owned any Filtertrons before so I have nothing to go by except what it does and what is in my head. If there is ever a problem I'd probably get the custom shop to wind me one.

I guess these are made in the FujiGen factory then. That is a very highly regarded factory for sure. I can attest to that!

Re: New Axe - Gretsch Malcolm Young

Looks like love at first feel. No point beating around the bush, that girl's got rhythm. Plug a live wire into the jack and give it some big balls. Let there be rock! :naughty:
