Greetings friends...

i'm enjoying the Phat Cat big time, wondering if there are any reception for the following PC-related ideas:

*Stacked Cat- the beloved PC in a stacked format: the ultimate silent feline...

*Rail Cat- a slightly hotter PC but all the twang, giving the STK-S2 some worthy competition...

Re: New Cat ideas...

I'd like to see them make a phat cat like the lace noiseless P-90s.

It's neither of those designs. Hard to explain unless you see it.

Like 2 coils turned on their side with the screws running down the middle.

Re: New Cat ideas...

Sorry, I wouldn't change a thing- the phat cat's are the pickup I've been searching for for years. I don't get any more hum with them than I do regular humbuckers.

Re: New Cat ideas...

The Jazz Cat. Keep the samE wind but use alnico v polepieces instead of alnico II bars and steel poles.

Re: New Cat ideas...

The Phat Cat has a noise advantage with the cover -- shunts a lot of noise to ground.

The one I'd like to see is the Jazz Cat for neck -- just an underwound version at about 7.0k

Re: New Cat ideas...

zhang, have you messed with the mags in a phat cat yet?

Re: New Cat ideas...

I swapped in an A3 once on the bridge side. Made it a little thinner than I liked so I went back to the A2.

EDIT: But it was an underwound (7.0k) version, so if it was a little hotter, it probably would have been fine.

Hey... how about perfecting the P90 in a humbucker format first? The Phat Cat isn't a bad pickup, but it's not a P90.

As far as newer pups go, Benjy_26 is onto something... there need to be a reproduction of the classic neck Gibson alnico P90.

+ 1000%

Jazz Cat Neck Model... 7k and A2 magnets... perfecto!

Re: New Cat ideas...

I played an old Gibson jazz box with the alnico poled P90 in the neck. it was what I've always heard in my head when I think "jazz box".

It would work and it can be done. Frailin makes a rod mag P90 right now so it's not much of a stretch to make a Phat Cat-style version.

This is something I've asked SD for, for several years. Basically, just a "rail" version of the Phat Cat. My Patriot originally came with humbucker-sized rail singles, and it has an amazing 57mm wide string spread. I'd love to put some 'cats in there.

Re: New Cat ideas...

i believe that duncan just did the rod magnet phatcat with hamer.

a phat cat is a p90, there is a thread that shows a normal p90 compared to a phat cat. the coils are exactly the same. the a5 mag vs the a2 changes things and the new magnets are smooth vs the old rough sand cast magnets. not sure what the tonal difference is
