Nice Davey, you're playing show you can play the neck very well and fast. I think you simply have to increase your scale knowledge to avoid being too much off. The more you'll be over backtracks, the better you will feel them.

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

Okay, I did a real fast pass at the backing track, like 30 minutes total. Here's a quick rundown:
To get the tone I wanted for this song, I pulled out my trusty PLANK, my '79 Strat. It's going into my Korg PXR4, but I used the "80's" preset instead of the usual "2001" preset.
I broke the riff down into 3 sections: Verse > Bridge > Chorus; since the entire track is only about 1:35 long, these are very short, as you can imagine.
For the VERSE, I came up with a cool Dio-esque guitar part that works quite nicely against the backing track. The pinch harmonics were tripled, a la Zakk Wylde, and panned left - center - right.
For the BRIDGE, I play whole note power chords: F5 - G5 - A5
The CHORUS, is very short: just a quick open G pedal tone figure before the solo.

I tracked the solo with the neck pickup, which will be obvious when you hear it. My wife says you can tell I'm tired, because she doesn't like the lead break (two 6-string sweeps) ... I think it's a passable stab at the solo; the second take is the one I kept. The solo ends with a classic TO harmony section! lol And then back to the verse and some stupidly fast runs for the very end -- I couldn't help myself!! :D The ending was screaming for an Yngwie style run ...

Anyway, that's that! http://twilightsongs2.tripod.com

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

TO that was awesome, sounded like a song with the build up, the pinch harmonics were pretty cool too.

Nice sweeps also :headbang:

I wish i could sweep pick well enough to finish that bloody clip im working on :@

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

Very nice TO... very TO'esque indeed :) You never go for the obvious and your angle is always very creative and different. The "tuga-tuga-pinch" (for lack of a better description) is very typical of the 80s. Great execution as usual

A question: what scale did you use? It's more dissonnant than mine, which was a simple Am (C) scale. I'm in a learning phase these days :)

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

sly, thats my main problem lol.. i spent my early days playing 2 chord punk, then just played along records. had a band for a month which broke up cos of diferent tastes and ideas and pretty much never looked into scales =P i just built up speed more and more and more and more

but since i got the guitar port i'm taking stabs at rids backing tracks hehe

TO, those pinch harmonics are killing me lol good one =) i'd just like to hear ya do something more umm.. loose hehe

For the verse, it's an A pedal tone with D, E, and F over top. I was able to change the modality of the piece by accentuating the E instead of the A. This gives the song an E Phrygian feel. The pinch harmonics are E, btw.
For the brige, it's a G pedal tone; that's the dissonance (G being the minor 7th of A)/
For the solo, I start with Am arpeggios, descend with C Major, and then use the G note (3rd string, 12th fret) for the tapping. This pushes the modality a bit, too; the reason being that I wanted to modulate it to Em ...
The solo finished with E Pentatonic Minor. The harmony is C Maj Pentonic. The flurishes at the end of the solo are Em arpeggios.
The scale at the end of the track is straight up GMajor, descending, then ascending.

So, when I was jamming on it, I developed this theme:
Am Pentatonic - C Major - Am Pentatonic - G Mixolydian tapping - Em Pentatonic - G Major ...

... And YES, I did put that much thought into the solo, even tho I blew it out pretty fast. I was trying to pull out some of those hidden notes in all those layered chords, and E kept coming back ... so I knew what my main 'theme' would be.

I hope that makes sense!! :) :D

LOL! I'm so not a 'loose jam' style guitarist! I would suck in one of those hippie jam bands! lol :D

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

Well, that makes a lot of sens, but my musical theory is not wide enough to be able to make these decisions. I would consider it to be a complete mistake to play Em and G scales over an Am chord progression. This is a lack of knowledge form my part... I don't know how far I can go in that department... so I end up always playing in the middle of the road :)

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

exactly what i was thinking TO :D

im gonna do mine today

and rock you all like a hurricane!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in the same boat Sly :friday:

I've just started going through all this with my guitar teacher, I know you can do it, its just applying it and making it sound good thats the problem :smack:

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

Yep... I can't make the diffence between a transiant, dissonant yet correct venture into a foreign scale and a complete song fuc% up :laugh2:

And I DON't have a teacher :smack: so I won 't know anytime soon... maybe I should buy a book...

Yet we must admit that TO's theory level is a heck of a lot higher than any average rock Joe :)

Re: New clip: Kicka$$ R'n'R

Yeah, I know but I can name you many "pros" who know zip about that. Both good and average pro player, from Eric Clapton to Ace Frehley. Rock'n Roll has never been known to produce great theoricians, as opposed to jazz for instance :)
