New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

Evan likes watching us suffer... ;)

Would the parallel axis pole pieces help a humbucker sound more like a P-90?

It could work both ways.

It's a P-90 sized Crazy 8 ;)

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

I'm wondering how it attaches. The two screws aren't in the same place as on a regular P90 but are those the mounting screws?

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

The idea is to get the sound of a regular humbucker from a guitar that is routed for P90s or mini humbuckers WITHOUT having to mangle the pickup cavities to accept the new pickups.

IMO, ex-250 should be the first beta tester on the Parallel Axis Soapbar.

Hey Funkfingers, howdy?

I don't get it...

That's the one I am talking about. Isn't it the very same as the one Evan posted as far as the issues regarding "having to mangle the pickup cavities to accept the new pickups"?

:)

Hence, a HB to fit a p90 cavity already exists in the Duncan custom shop line. That's all I am saying. And as far as I can tell, the mounting on the new one is the same. Isn't it? So I don't get it...

Are the coils closer together? ;)

Hey Funkfingers, howdy?

Hi, there.

I have a pickup exactly like the one you posted. My example styles itself the JB90. (A JB-style humbucker, shoehorned into a P90 soapbar cover.) It fitted directly into my PRS SE One, requiring only the drilling of two new height adjustment screw holes.

Unfortunately for my JB90, a SDUG forum member created the Wattage Signature guitar (a PRS SE One with a Filter'Tron style pickup). As soon as I found a pre-owned TV Jones Classic on eBay, the JB90 was history.

The newly announced model features the Parallel Axis HB type polepieces. I imagine them to be in "F" spacing rather than "G". I would also expect the magnet choice and coil wind to follow PA specs as closely as reasonably practical.

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

Cool to hear those.

:)

Here is my p90 parts thinline:

The trembucker spacing would be a better fit. I currently have Lollars in this guitar, and while I love the neck, I could not bond with the bridge. Hence, I am really curious about this new design.

BTW from the website, I get the idea that these p90 sized HBs come only in black... Not a biggie, but still... looks you know... Is your JB90 black as well?

I agree purely on the basis that it means free stuff for me, but I don't actually own a P-90 routed guitar. Might present somewhat of a difficulty. Thats why my original idea was for a hum-sized P-90 with parallel axising.

But hey, if i have to buy a P-90 guitar, I guess I have to buy a P-90 guitar. :naughty:

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

I will gladly volunteer my services as tester. I have a '02 Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker w/P-90 l use with high gain and it hums like a large dragon in the bars. I'll be playing in one the weekend after next and again the following week, to try it out live. ;)

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

Pretty cool idea! What about a special run for forum members? Isn't it about that time again? :D

I would think a PATB-3 in a soapbar like this would be loved by all with a p-90 axe. Would be perfect in a couple of my recent Gibson Tribute Les Paul Studios!

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

Color me confused on this one. IIRC, the Parallel Axis series pickups were designed to give a 25.5" scale "Strat" Style guitar, more of an LP sound. In fact, these pickups were introduced in the Kramer Pro Axe guitars back in the 80's. Since P90's are commonly found in set neck LP style guitars, they've already got that sound the originals were trying to create. I understand that there's a lot of other guitars that have minis and P90's, but....so yeah, that's a bit confusing.

Other than that, they look cool as hell! I'm anticipating some more details. Is there going to be some special forum pricing like when the staples were introduced?

Re: New Custom Shop Pickup - P-90 Content

Cool...

...but not for me, personally. I have never owned a guitar with P-90's with which I wanted to change the tone to be more humbucker-ish. Replacing a bad P-90 with a good P-90, sure. I've replaced several Epi P-90's with Gibson ones for a great improvement. But a good P-90 always leaves me wondering why I even have guitars with humbuckers in them. I've owned plenty of guitars with humbuckers that I wanted to sound like P-90's. I hacked my '83 LP Custom to put soap bars in it.

It’s a P-90 Staples!

OR

A P-90 with Braces!

AND

BTW - the mounting screws are nothing like a P-90.
