New ENGL amp looks amazing

Yeah, this is a beast. I tried to order a Savage 60 earlier this year, but MF kept pushing back the delivery date so I cancelled.

This is like a Savage 100 (EL34) with some extra shaping options. And it costs 4K in USA!! It makes me sad that they cost half of that in europe.

It does indeed, but I'm not a big fan of how that guy dials in his tones.

I mean, don't get me wrong, his mixes sound polished, and he builds them around the tone that he likes for guitar, but I feel his tones are a bit mid-heavy stuffy for my taste. He's one of those "5150 mids on 6" kinda dude. I mean, it's a shame, because he's a really likeably guy on his videos, but his tones are a bit too "modern" mid-heavy for my taste.

JMO.

I am tired of watching trust fund kids play with their toys.

That is one of the most depressing things about the internet; you get to see how much free/easy money some people have, and also how much free time this affords them.

Everything he records sounds the same. He has a template he uses for everything, his playing clips are synced with the DI signals so he can reamp through any new piece of gear he gets and crank out new videos with footage he recorded earlier. He isn't actually playing the gear, he is just hooking up to his test harness and making new videos.

I don't know, man. Editing a video is also a big chore. I used to take a few hours to edit a couple of 20-min classes that I got paid for a while ago, and they didn't have nearly as much production as the guy's.

I don't know if he edits his own videos, tho. Many of the YouTubers I follow have someone edit their own stuff. But either way, he's basically producing entertainment. I work doing 3D modeling for basically cartoons, so I don't really have a negative predisposition towards people who make a living off entertainment.

Although, as a musician (more like a hobbyist in my case) who struggles to earn money to buy their own shit, I totally get what you mean. And really, like I said, I don't like the guy's tone, but not because it's not well-produced, but because it's not my thing. Not very Metal. But at least, he's not like Fluff who has like 15 seconds of playing and 10 minutes of banter.

He is not a big youtuber. The point is that who has the time/money to buy every piece of new gear and edit videos for a living? Its not something with a future career path. Someone with < 100K viewers is not making a living wage in the USA.

I suspect he is independently wealthy and can keep doing this as long as he wants, without any constraints to make money. Maybe next year his will borrow his dad's catamaran and cruise through asia?

I wasn't picking on him specifically, although he bothers me more than most because he lacks all personality and he makes videos like a factory. He *never* plays live in his videos, it is all pre recorded and highly edited.

IMO, he is one of the least entertaining geartarists because he has zero personality. Fluff at least has some inflection in his voice and you get the feeling he is committed to being a musician. That weird kid could be an automaton for all I know.

I prefer this guy over Fluff, personally. Yeah, his personality is kinda generic, but it appears to me more like he's not a native speaker and that's it.

I cannot stand Fluff. His low key "I've got friends in high places" attitude and his whole "Mastodon is the heaviest band ever" approach to "Metal".

Not like it's a bad thing or anything, but do many people who play mid-gain stuff buy ENGL amps?

I know they have a Ritchie Blackmore amp... which is kind of odd considering it's basically a simplified Savage, LOL. I have no idea what Ritchie Blackmore sounds like nowadays, TBH. But he never appeared to me as the guy who would use an ENGL Savage for his stuff.

I atually liked the 80's Priest/Van Halen tones he got out of the amp @ around (roughly) the 8 min mark best....the high gain (djenty stuff) sounded kinda generic to me....

Still I do like Engl's ...especially the Savage.

Also Sadly , you can never have enough gear...whether it's all from the sweat of your brow or the trust fund daddy set up for you..it matter's not. Life is'nt fair. lol, live with it. It's always nice to hear someone who can do something good with what they have and this dude undoubtedly has the chops it takes for that. Sure, it's modern but that's probably what most folk want to hear these days anyway..

I used to own the Engl Special Edition. Also an E670; this is a slight rework of that amp. I didn't care for it much. Yes a BILLION options but I wasn't in love with it. Very smooth, all across the board. The Revv Generator 120, or even the KSR Colossus is a way, way better amp.

The G120 has four channels and for the 2 gain channels 3 'aggression' levels, aka gain structures. That gives that amp 8 totally distinct tones that all have a truly distinct voice and musical use. The purple channel can be voiced by simple toggles (all midi switchable) to go from a JCM800 to a Marshall hotrod to an SLO style tone. The Red is where Mesa Boogie wants to live. From the Boogie Mark tones to the Recto's. Green is crunch territory, from vox to plexi and then a little bit more. Blue? Clean. Never use it.

The Engl's four channels all sound and feel very similar. It never gets really dirty. It's super tight, yes but it never gets that sizzle in the top like a JCM or SLO does.

Disagree. I can live on my Revv, my small toaster-style custom amp, and a handful of LP's. I am doing that as we speak, by the way. I don't need walls of amps and guitars anymore. In fact, all I play is 1 superstrat (HSH), 1 superTele (HH Floyd), 1 hotrod strat (Iron maiden style), 1 Bich in C standard, and 4 LP's (pafs+trem, pafs+hardtail, hotrod+trem, hotrod+hardtail). I'm thinking of swapping some things though, and getting an SS tele and an SSS strat, but to hold me over, I'm getting an SSS LP (no, not strat singles, or p90's. something unique). But that's just pandering. I could truly do it all with just those 8 and be happy. I don't need anything else than those.

Well, that was tongue in cheek, but since you took it literally. Yes you can get by with a Squire bullet and a gorilla amp :D

I know I could but it's still more fun having a roomful of guitars and amps. Most of mine are cheap to mid-priced. I love my Kramer Baretta Special as much as my Ibby Prestige (maybe even a bit more :D). I only have a couple of higher end guitars anyway...it's more the variety that I enjoy..

My wife and I ran our own restaurant for 8 years and a catering company for 12 before that. I assure you it was'nt easy work...

I recently I inherited property as well, but due to other things that happened in my life I would'nt consider myself "fortunate" at all. Believe me I know how unnecessary guitars and amps are in the greater scheme of things. But playing them gives me a kick...and I need all the kicks I can get.

I've wanted to try a Revv amp for a while since I moved to Canada. Sadly, the only realistic option I have a use for right now is the G20, but I wish it was the red channel rather than the Purple. I much prefer the Revv Red in my HX to the Purple.

Its on my radar now. Thanks for that. If I buy a boutique high gain amp, it might be this one!

Me rambling here, but there is really no reason for boutique tube amps anymore with something like an Axe FX, Kemper, or software if you record.

Bogner, Diezel, Engl, and Randall all sort of cover the same ground if you insist on high gain tube or solid state amps.

I'd buy one of these used, but I wouldn't shell out a lot for it.

I wouldn't really buy a tube amp nowadays unless it were something that offered unique functionality, like a 6505 with EL34s, a capability/sound the original didn't offer with its 6L6s and something many people like now.

(Now that I think of it, when's the last time I saw an amp with ECC83s?)

I also have what's called an "integrated quad" in my Carvin MTS3200 (JCM800 clone). 2 6L6s and 2 EL34s.

Some of these new amps--they're like Mesa Road Kings in complexity. These days, I just want that in software.

Flat power amp, flat cabs, flat mics, and impulse responses out the wazoo will cover most bases if the crowd can even tell the difference in tone.

Just my opinion, YMMV.

Also, Rivera. Forgot them.

With ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe and tougher relations with China, good luck replacing tubes in the future, as well.

Don't get me wrong. Nice kit. I just feel like desiring it is a waste of time--like actually expecting a Porsche as a daily driver.
