New Fuggly Guitar Day-Long & Boring with Pics

Re: New Fuggly Guitar Day-Long & Boring with Pics

Cool ride. I'd rock it.

The whole trick to making a Figsby work is to pre-bend the strings at the ball end. I use a pair of needle nose & bend 'em right on the winds so the string conforms to the whacky over/under route through the bridge... Once the string is "locked" on the post I pull it straight up off the "front" edge of the bridge (where the strings go under) before threading through the tuners. I'll often hold the ball end in place with pliers (or my thumb) while I pull up.

Seriously, once I got that whole pre-bend thing together string changes on a Bigsby don't take much longer then doing a regular non-locking bridge. Oh, and change strings one at a time!!!
.

Thnaks for the tips Moose! Bigsby is def new territory for me :

And thanks everyone for the kudos- just really hafta decide want to do pup-wise...PAF to keep the vintage vibe, or something pretty heavy in the bridge to make it a "sleeper" ;)

Welcome to the world of PRS. They're just like any other guitar manufacturer out there - some are "ok" and some are fantastic; congrats on finding one that really sings! :) Every time I've ever thought about buying a Gibson I just play my PRS and all is well. You'll notice tuning stability and impeccable craftsmanship with it - no shortcuts.

Thanks Bro :D (and thanks for the FYI on those wolfetones)- def not my first PRS though! I had an '87 Custom 10 Top w/ Birds and braz board BITD, 2 other CU24s (non 10s), a McCarty 20th anni, an SC250, and now this one. I think thats all of them :scratchch

Hey thanks Christian! High praise coming from a non-PRS fan like yourself! :D (and FWIW- this thing is far closer to a Gibson than a PRS-barring the 10"radius)

Now as an interesting note- the pickups in this guitar with the oversized slugs are extremely dynamic. And the one thing I've been absolutely floored by is just how sensitive they are to string brand/construction. I've had 4 different sets of strings on the guitar- the original PRS pure nickels, the DR Pure Blues, and last night/today, I was experiementing with a set of Dean Markley NickelSteels & Ernie Ball Classic Rock & Roll Slinkys (pure nickel)

when I put the Nick steels on last night- the tone tightened up,got edgy, bright, middy and the fizzy top of the DRs became a crackly sparkle (in a good way)- it was a drastic difference-most drastic I had ever heard in a string change- like I had put a Duncan Custom in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. It sounded GREAT for metal, but juts too hard edged- too "metawl" for my tastes these days, so I put on the Nickel R&Rs- which resulted in another DRASTIC tone change- it was like I had pulled the "duncans", and put in a set of Gibson 57+/57 classics. The tone remainded tight, warmed up, got really punchy in the mids, and had just a little grit on top. Absolutely sings.

I don't know what exaclty is the scoop with these pickups...the winds, mags, slugs, but for all the years I've played, all the guitars and pickups and strings I've tried, I've yet to hear a set of pickups act even remotely like this. Very odd.

and thanks again Moose- string changing went much easier today :bigthumb:

Don't get me wrong...I think PRS makes some of the best guitars you can buy today they are just not my mug of beer.

They play great (out of the box!) they sound great and they look great...whats not to like??

I'd rock a RW neck McCarty in a heartbeat but the Starla's no slouch either!

Now the first time I saw this (DiPinto Belvedere Deluxe) at the Guitar Expo I thought wow now this is ugly and bizarre. I thought if Liberace played bass then this would be his lol. But the more I looked at it and played it......well I fell in love with it. Beleive it or not it plays and sound awesome and such a thin neck. I found out later that it has a custom pickguard

Yeah I like it too :D Better all the time. I do think I'm going to pop some Duncans in it. I don't dislike the stockers, but they just don't have quite enough bite/scream for me. I actually went to do it last week-transferring the PGs from my Les Paul into the Starla, but when I saw all the "activity" in the control cavity- yikes...too intimidating for my meager soldering skills.

Think I'm going to try a set of A2 Pros because its been many years since I've had some, and let a local shop handle the swap.
