Awhile back I found my trusty old Fast Fret had dried out, Not thinking much of it I ordered a new one. The new one is super different, no more felt, its more like a sponge with a plastic handle and the formula seems changed. Doing some digging around people are saying that it changed a few years ago. But then I found other people who said that the "secret sauce" to fast fret is just mineral oil and you can revive old sticks with a few drops of it. Has anyone tried just using mineral oil? A bottle of mineral oil and a polishing cloth is far cheaper. Are there other products to consider? I would be interested in others experiences. Thanks.
 
I'd be curious about that, too. I used this stuff from Kyser, Dr. Stringfellow or something. They stopped making it. If I knew what the ingredients were, I'd make it myself.

Yeah I remember the one you are talking about, bums me out how lately many of my old favorite products have either changed or completely gone defunct. I may just have to experiment with a bottle of straight mineral oil just to see.
 
What I don't like about the new Fast Fret is that they replaced the metal can with a plastic one. I have had the plastic cans crack in my gig bag, and the Fast Fret has dried out. If you have the metal cans, hold on to them; they are the same size.

I wonder how much of that stuff is all mineral oil anyway. I do use some Ernie Ball string wipes now and then, but they aren't the same.
 
They still make that stuff? I hadn't bought any since the late 80's and last used it in the 90's when I worked at a music store. I just wipe the strings down with a rag to get finger sweat and crap off them. I can go a few months without a restring.
