One of my former students hit me up today.
He had this dirty and neglected esp ltd 407-7 that he wanted rid of.
We talked trades, and what I had to offer him was just too wild for him.
I ended up giving him 2 pedals and cash.

I ordered strings off Amazon that will be here Tuesday. ...as I don't stock anything for 7 string axes.

I wiped it off and sprayed deoxit in all the things. Wiped the fretboard with lemoil and a T-shirt.

The strings are corroded, but here is a preliminary test run.

I will give it all the love and setup once the strings come in.
And I'll have to see how I can handle a 7 string.

I have no ideas where to tune this...it's drop G# at the moment.

Nice I was looking at that model when i bought mine. You will get used to it pretty quickly. Out biggest hump is calling out the wrong chords both my bassist and i do it. One of us will say F# but we both know the other guy means C#. It is just brain farting. Once we start playing everything is automatic and smooth.

One tip pick up a 10 pack of single Bs. This way you can just use your regular strings and add the B if you are getting your 6 string packs in 3 - 12 pack. No need to manage extra sets and cheaper than buying 7 string sets. I got mine on the GHS site which is cool I use Boomers.

Hey man congrats. Once I started playing 7 all the time (and especially once I started writing songs on it) I got hooked. I only play 6 strings now if I have to for a project.

I find that drop tuning on a 7 is really easy to get used to coming from 6, because the low string is basically just another 5th string (A, or in your case G#). So you've got a normal 25.5" guitar tuned a half step down, and then an extra low 5th string underneath.

I like standard B to E tuning best. Securb's suggestion of just getting a pack of low strings and sticking with your preferred six string set is a good one. I was using EB Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms in standard and I got some extra 68s and 70s for my low strings. Use a tension calculator to figure out what gauge low string balances well with the set you already like. I haven't found an off the shelf 7 set with good balanced tension. Their low strings are too floppy or their high strings are too stiff. IMO YMMV etc

In my band we already tune drop B with our 6 stringers... I think with this I want to go silly low....not quite all the way down to stupid low.

Looking forward to Testing out the different amps and speakers I have collected in the name of science....see which ones sound better or worse. Try to dissect tone from mud.

Does anyone know anything about these pickups? Hard to find info on them because most of these came with emgs I think.

By B string do you mean the 7th string? Or the 2nd string?

Instead of going really low you could try tuning to drop B and adding a high string, 8.5 or something. I dunno if you play any leads but that could be fun.

On the other hand, if you wanted to tune to (say) low F#, you'd have to go really thick. I think the lightest usable gauge on a 25.5" scale would be .080 - you'd get 16.7 lbs of tension. Might have to drill out the hole in the tuner to fit it. In the name of science.

I can get the regular boomers in 64 but looks like nothing brighter than that. They only go up to 54 in those models.

Thanks for the tip buddy!

Yep, I use the regular .09 - .42 Boomer sets on everything, including the 7 string. When stringing up the 7, I just grab one of these extra strings. I think I am saving around a buck a set, and as I said, I do not have to manage having multiple sets or buy "7 string" sets of strings for more money.
