Re: new guitar project needs finish

A vintage tinted shellac or other hand rubbed finish would be the best, in my opinion.

Also, a nice tobacco burst would look good too.

That's a really nice piece of wood there! love the lightly spalted spots too!

Yeah I was thinking vintage tint as well. Even something like a cherry sunburst would look badass!

Re: new guitar project needs finish

If not a neutral-colored finish like Tung/Tru Oil then a nice tobacco or sienna burst IMO

Re: new guitar project needs finish

It looks so nice, it's hard to imagine making it look bad with anything that's been mentioned so far.

Re: new guitar project needs finish

just don't go with solid colors, go with anything translucent wether it be burst or just oil based and itll look great! Maybe try a light burst or honey burst :scratchch

Re: new guitar project needs finish

This is such a great piece of wood. Just go for a natural finish. Don't even burst it. Burst will go against the grain of the wood, as it usually has a 'teardrop' burst.

Re: new guitar project needs finish

Whatever you do, make sure to buy more clear and sealer than you normally would, because those small punks (aka. the light spalting in places) can suck up a boatload of sealer or if done straight away clearcoat.

i have never been a fan og the teardrop burst... though a normal burst with less of a dark area that follows the shape would be nice

Re: new guitar project needs finish

I'd use aniline dye on the top in a warm tone to enhance the natural color, such as amber or a warm golden color, then Tru Oil it. Same for the back in either darker amber or reddish.

that back looks a bit shiny rather then just sanded??

Re: new guitar project needs finish

can you laquer over dye?

Yes. You can read quite a bit of finishing information over on Stewmac.com in their free information section, as well as on lmii.com and reranch.com. If those three sites can't answer any question you have, you're asking the wrong questions ;)
