New neck for partscaster

Re: New neck for partscaster

Thanks for the info. For your first warmoth neck, which neck did you choose: warmoth pro, vintage modern, or total vintage? It was going to go with the vintage modern, standard thin. I'll probably go with the 6105 frets too.

Re: New neck for partscaster

I actually measured the nut width of my guitars: telecaster 1 5/8, schecter 1 5/8, strat 1 11/16. That was a bit of a surprise. I guess I don't mind a smaller nut width so long as the neck is thin and the action is really low. I think 1 11/16 is PLENTY wide, 1 3/4 would be crazy in my opinion. I'm going with 1 11/16. Hopefully that will help keep the low and high e strings away from the edge too.

Re: New neck for partscaster

you do realize that nut width means jack squat in terms of strings being too close to the edge right?

The thing that influences string location is how close to the edge the string slots in the nut are cut.

Nut width only really influences how close together the strings are relative to each other.

I ordered my first neck in like 88 or 89, so I am doing this from memory. I ordered a compound radius birdseye neck that was vintage modern specs. The neck was huge(my mistake) and was reshaped quite a bit. My favorite Strat is my Eric Clapton Strat mainly due to the neck shape. So I attempted to reshape it to that. It got close but not perfect. The 6105 frets work really well for me. They feel a lot like a vintage Strat but they are a bit higher and a bit wider. The only caution I would watch for is to try t NOT buy a neck with that stupid side adjustment on the heel. I have no idea why they ever did that???

Re: New neck for partscaster

The mighty mite & similar budget replacement necks are NOT likely to suit your desires. Go to e-bay and search for "strat replacement necks". You'll find both new & used. The standard "C" shape neck from a modern strat/tele will be 0.85" at the 1st fret. This might feel a little thick. I prefer a 0.75" and search accordingly. These are sometimes referred to as "wizard" shape necks. You also need to pay attention to the fret "style". I prefer the "super jumbo" but the "jumbos" also work very well. The height/width of what constitutes jumbo and super jumbo varies a little bit so you should do a little research on fret profiles before you decide on anything. You can go to your local guitar shop and play guitars with necks & frets that you like & then obtain as many stats on them as you can find. Then when you go to e-bay you should be able find just what the doctor ordered.

Good Luck

Warmoth makes awesome stuff. I have had my first Warmoth neck on my 57 RI Strat since 88 or 89 and I can honestly say it has been adjusted maybe three times.

A very long delayed thank you! Getting the specs on the thickness at the first fret was the missing piece of the puzzle for me, until now. I will definitely be on the lookout for something 0.80 or thinner. The Warmoth is .80 apparently http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/BackContours.aspx

My mighty mite is .85 so any relief on that thickness would be welcome. I think .80 would do just fine.
