New old amp day

Today is the 20th anniversary of my dear mum’s passing and I had planned to get something for me out of what I’d saved from my inheritance (most of it is tied up in the house). I was thinking of something small and simple like a pedal, may be a Friedman Smallbox as I like the other 2 pedals I’ve got. However, for quite a while I’d been looking for an older turret board Marshall for no other reason than I wanted to replace the ‘65 JTM 45 I once had (birth year too) that I sold for the lowly sum of £100 and regretted for all these years. Well one of those would set me back maybe £5000 these days so out of the question. Well my mum must have been looking down as this amp showed up when I wasn’t expecting it. It’s a ‘73 turret board 100 super tremolo and it’s all original… everything. I’ve checked to make sure it’s works although I haven’t tried the trem as yet, the amp is dead quiet at idle with no hum but hit a chord and it’s fine. No crackly pots or anything so I’ll leave it alone and play every now and and hopefully gig it if I can get my band up and running again. This is the amp I’m going to leave my grandson along with a couple of guitars ( my boys have already laid their claim to some) and whether he uses it or not hopefully it will help him later in life. So a nod to my mum whilst I’m sipping some Glenfiddich this evening basking in the glory of this wonderful amp. Cheers!

sweet amp! ive only ever played through a little earlier model but i assume they are very similar. thats a keeper for sure

Nice! That's a beauty right there. And with it bone stock, I would say rare these days. In the 80's it was not uncommon for the tremolo circuit to be modified in to an extra gain circuit. Keep that thing stock.

Thanks y’all folks, looking forward to playing it through my similar era (forget the exact date) checker grille 4 x 12.

and yeah JMP/ HBE sorry for your loss too ( and all you other folks who’ve lost loved ones) I feel your pain, it never leaves does it? You just have to learn to live with it… circle of life and all that :2:

No it never leaves. My brain still sends me phantom signals sometimes "gotta call Mom".
But she passed on her terms which is what she would have wanted.

Wow! What a great gift to yourself! 1st impressions?

Thanks! Yes I’m chuffed and whist I’m happy to have it there is just no way I can get close to getting an idea of what it really sounds like, it’s just so damn loud … lol.

I’m supposed to be rehearsing with my mates on the 5th Feb so am hoping to take it down and giving it some play time.

[QUOT=dave74;n6145186]Awesome that it's not been modded. Are the tubes even original stock too? What are they?[/QUOTE]

ah, sorry I meant it hasn’t been butchered or molested. I’m not really sure if it has been re-valved/ re-tubed but I would think it had. I do know it hasn’t been used for many years. The tubes in it are old Yugoslavian Ei EEC83’s and Unmarked EL34s with burgundy bases. I will obviously have it thoroughly checked out but will look for an amp tech who is trustworthy as I don’t want it messed with and don’t even want the Bulgin mains socket changed.

Here is a pic with the cab from the same era

tubes and caps wear out. when someone says all original, i dont expect the tubes to be the ones that came with the amp, and if the filter caps are original, they probably need to be replaced. love the gut shot

Yes I agree ref the caps but for prosperities sake I’m going to leave it alone for now at least. To be honest I’m happy with my Cornford’s as far as gigging amps go but but will give this a run out at some point although I have never had a 100 watter and can only hope I can get it up loud enough to get a decent sound. I know I could get an attenuater but I didn’t really like the THD I had several years ago.

If its going to be a player replace the 6 filter cans & bias filters and get it looked at by a qualified tech.
If its going to be a museum piece don't do anything.
Personally i'd send it to Dave Friedman and mod it.
And for those who are the "Marshall purists" that say "never drill holes in a Marshall" and all that other forum crap ive heard for years it was Chief Marshall Engineer Santiago Alverez who recommended me Friedman and told me "WTF man its just an amp".
That was 12 years ago, could not be happier.
Its your amp do whatever suits your needs.
