Funny that I prefer used more beat up guitars. But I also find that I'm craving beefier necks these days. I had big necks prior, then it seemed I ended up with a bunch of guitars that have 60's slim necks. I can play both fine, but I find the bigger necks just do it for me. So while overall I prefer a 61RI to a standard SG, the bigger neck has me liking this.
This guitar is beautiful. But I have to admit that two things about it that go against what I'm normally comfortable with are:
I normally buy either used, or killer deal if new. This was neither. I also like used because I can mod them, keep them out of the case and not worry about a ding here or there. Not so with this one. So the fact I paid used LP price for this and its so damn pretty, I'm having a little heartache. Sam Ash has a 60 day return policy so I'll see how the honeymoon goes.
Love the way they sound and play, but for some reason whenever I get one, I don't bond with it as well as some others, so I'm not sure really what it is. I like to swap pickups and I do know that I have a harder time finding a match for SG's that fits the sounds I like. Almost like they sound great when other people play them, but not as much when I play them. So for years I've bought and sold them over and over.
No story. Just GAS, which of course defies logic and explanation.

Very nice. I like both the blue and the gold.
One thing I've noticed about SGs that is very unique among guitars.........just about any color looks great on an SG. Eg: I hate white LPs (they look like cheap plastic to me), but it looks terrific on an SG.

Cool color. The seafoam-ish metallic one is where it's at for me. Some goon was selling a 98 SG-Z here local in that color for $600 last week on craigslist. Alas, I haz no moneyz.

Definitely not digging the pickups, too muddy and undefined, especially the neck pup. The bridge handles high gain power chords and single note stuff well, but sucks for more complex rhythms and both are horrible in the clean and classic rock medium gain dept.
If I replace the pickups and electronics, I'll keep the originals on hand so I can always return it to stock. But finding the right pickups, hmm. And chrome, or maybe double white or zebra black/white? So many choices!

Its just a standard, stock pups are the regular 498T/490R.

Those are the 490/498 pickups, right? Blueman335 has suggested a simple swap of the magnets between the two pickups to clear up the mud of the neck and any harshness on the bridge. MIght give that a try.

Not interested in that, too much waxy mess I'd rather just replace them clean and keep the originals intact in case I decide to sell it I can make it stock without the mess.
