New Pickups for Les Paul

Hello,

I have an 03 Les Paul Standard with Burstbucker Pros. I'm not getting a sound out of the BBs that I like -- too thin, buzzy, nasally. I need a fatter, thicker, chunkier sound, especially with higher gain. The BBs sound okay with less gain, but turn them up and the tone is too thin. I was thinking about 59s, Fralins, or Seth Lovers. I have 59s in many of my other guitars, but they are mostly strats. I have a set in my Gibson V, but I am having the same problem as with the BBs - lower gain I can get a fatter tone, but higher gain and they thin out. Any suggestions? Any clips of Seth Lovers, Fralins, or 59s in a Les Paul? I'm not sure if I'm explaining my problem appropriately.

Mark, I saw your reply in the 57 goldtop post so you might want to look at some of my suggestions there as well.

The seths are warm, vintage sounding pup. They can get bright, (for buckers) but most people find them warm and sweet.

The 59's are an option but you won't get a whole lot of mids from them only treble and bass, if that's more of what you want you could try that.

The A2P's or Pearly Gates are a definite possibility on the vintage side

Alnico 2 Pro---A PAF style pup with a modern side. It has good bass and treble with a nice mids as well. This pup has great string to string response and is very warm and thick.

Pearly Gates---A PAF style pup with more mids that the others and a top end sizzle in the cut/presence frequencies. It has mismatched coils (similiar to your BB's that contribute to its rude character.

On the High Output side you should consider the Custom Custom and the Custom.

Custom Custom---The Custom Custom has the same coil configuration as the Custom and Custom 5 but with an Alnico 2 magnet. It has smooth highs and lows and a large mids spike. It is the warmest of the high output pups, it is similiar to an overwound Alnico 2 Pro.

Custom---Lots of mids and treble with high output, the ceramic magnet gives this pup some grind. The pup cleans up nicely and definitely gives a nod to its PAF predessors.

I can get a pretty fat high gain tone with my stock 2003 LP Standard. At what height do you have the pickups set? I didn't like the tone of the bridge BB Pro till I had it sat to around 3/32". Lower the pickups and they fatten up.

another choice is the Rio grande BBQ - fat!!!
