New Project - Basswood Strat

Re: New Project - Basswood Strat

I really like their sound and they have some great songs.

Thanks!

Thanks–I am going with an "ebonized" mahogany pickguard...I'm really looking forward to the combo. I am debating about the neck...I have a MIM Fender Strat that I am trying to sell–the neck plays very nicely so I could put it on this guitar BUT I really want to get a Warmoth neck for it and try their roasted maple.

 Yes and yes on the roasted maple and mahog guard!!! My current Warmoth project will have a roasted neck.

Re: New Project - Basswood Strat

. I wanna make me a homemade basswood superstrat. My local guy has a heap of basswood body blanks for sale. :smokin:

Thanks! The Mahogany pickguard will look like Ebony, jet black, which I think will look nice with the white. And I think the Roasted Maple will look awesome with the white body.

What is your current project? If you haven't started a thread do you have pics? Would love to see the roasted maple neck.

It took me awhile to become a fan of Basswood...but sanding this body made me really love it! lol It is a very soft wood and easy to shape (unlike Mahogany, IMO.) Only thing to be careful with sanding is it got a little "spongy" on the side where I felt like instead of sanding I was taking out small chunks/pieces of wood. Changed to a new piece of sand paper (I use wet/dry and use a mostly dry cloth to prep the area I'm sanding) and didn't have the problem with the new paper.

You should try working with paulownia then. I drilled the cavity pickup holes with the drill bit in my hand. Very light and very soft. Basswood is nicer to work with.

How do you pronounce that wood? lol And that sounds like very soft wood then! My first experience with Basswood was not something I liked very well...but with the right pickup combination I love it!

Re: New Project - Basswood Strat

Been planning for months now, just ordered the body today. Mahogany carved top soloist w/ high figure zebrawood top. I'll get a thread going when it comes in, should be a couple of weeks or so. Will your neck have a maple fretboard too?

That will be awesome! I love Zebrawood! A thread on that would be awesome! HH pickup configuration?

This one will have a Rosewood board--depending on the coloring of it I may stain it black to keep with the Black on white coloring

Yeah it's a one piece top too :fest7: HSH, was gonna be HH until I found out they'll do the 24 fret reposition now regardless of middle rout. Pictures were taken down from the site when I bought them, should have snagged them before. Why not get ebony if you want black?

Looking forward to that project!

Well, I'm building a better playing version of a guitar I had before basically...the Liquifire and Screamin Demon sound best with a Rosewood board in my opinion.

If it's a very dark Rosewood then I will leave it as is but if it's a lighter Rosewood then I will darken it--maybe not jet black ebonized but darker so that the black pickguard and the brown board aren't clashing.

And I love an Ebony board but only paired with Mahogany...

Do it. I just got mine on today. The roasted maple neck is amazing. The tone is clearer at both ends of the pot than with the original maple/rosewood one. I love the feel. The color is nice too, it looks well-aged.

Re: New Project - Basswood Strat

Thought I'd toss this in for fun,
Got a Snow White chambered basswood Strat body (real bad back) and got a beveled all snow white pickgaurd, went HSS with it, put in a white covered '69 Strat in neck, white covered TwangBanger in the middle, and a double white (not cream) bobbin open coil SH-2 NECK for the bridge, so yeah it's a humbucker, but VERY BRIGHT so it goes well with the others. All vol, tone knobs bleached white, no numbers showing, wrapped the black taped part of my SH-2 w/white plumbers tape.
Wired so bridge is position 1, bridge and neck play together on position 4 (normally bridge + middle), position 3 is the bridge, position 2 is mid+neck, and position 1 is middle (TwangBanger).
A real blast wiring this thing. Very light colored maple neck, finished it myself after setting the fretboard the way I like it.
Talk about OCD! Well, I just love it. It looks like J.Beck in concert when all the white lights are on, so you can't see any cream or off white parchment knobs. Just gotta be careful tomorrow not to mix Fender and Duncan wiring out of phase.
As long as I'm careful should be fun. The TwangBanger I know is for the bridge but the middle has never been right for me, and I have tried so many SC's there. And didn't want a Tele there so this is a musical "Hail Mary" roll of the pick up dice, so I'm not worried, I can use it on one of my other Warmouth Strats if this doesn't work!
Your guitar looks beautiful, very well done, I must say. I'm sorry, but what did you mean by " both ends of the pot." Was that a typo, did you mean "neck"?

By the end of the pot? Perhaps he is in Washington or Colorado? lol I could be mistaken, but perhaps he is talking about both spectrums of the tone pots?...just a thought.

I don't know about the wiring on the Fender and SD but I had no problems with the DiMarzio humbucker and the SD humbucker I am using in this project (had it in a guitar before but hated the neck.) Sounds like a cool project! Pics?

No typo, I just wasn't clear about what I meant. I was referring to turning the tone pot to full bright or full dark. I guess both ends of the neck would be accurate too, since it's a huge improvement for any playing. I'll post pics after I get a chance to take them. I'll start a new thread for that.

Thats what I thought you were trying to say. That would be an awesome thread, looking forward to the pics!

Re: New Project - Basswood Strat

Update: Ordered the neck today–Warmoth Vintage Modern, Roasted Quartersawn Maple, Dark Indian Rosewood, 9.5 radius, Stainless Steel Medium Jumbo Frets. Can't wait to get this neck in–intrigued by the roasted Maple and was glad they could roast a Quartersawn neck.

For pickups I am going with a DiMarzio Liquifire in the Neck, a Lil Screamin Demon in the Middle, and a Screamin Demon in the Bridge. So theoretically an HHH guitar. The Pickguard will be a "Ebonized" Mahogany guard by Frank Verrilli . Black Gotoh VS100N tremolo.

The neck will take about 6 weeks to come in, so I will have to wait and be patient...lol
