New Project - Warmoth Mahogany with Flamed Redwood Top

Well, I have once again violated my "no more than 1 project and a time" rule... I have wanted an Ebony fretboard for a long time–just decided to go a different route on my projects so far. Then comes this beauty...1 piece Honduran Mahogany body with Flamed Redwood top. Just ordered the neck–Warmoth Mahogany with Black Ebony, no inlays with white side dots. Have not decided on pickups yet...any suggestions?

Saw that one on eBay and thought it was interesting. Very cool potential. Gonna Floyd it up??? ;)

Awesome! I assume you are going with your trademark oil stain finish? Should look gorgeous! I love Warmoths.

Pickup suggestions? Let's see, are you going with a 25.5" scale neck? Are you planning on doing coil splits? Is the body solid or chambered?

Great top on this one. It'll look really outstanding.

If it's chambered, I'd go with FilterTron pickups, otherwise, a pair of DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAFs. Don't know what the Duncan equivalents would be but maybe something that plays both clean and fuzzed.

Thanks! Definitely going with the oil finish especially with that wood grain! :)

Its the 7/8 Strat so I have to go with the 24 3/4. I don't know on the chambering–I would think not, it weighs 4lbs 6ounces and its smaller than a Strat body and has the large cavity.

I do not know about the coil splits yet...not a necessity for me so I could go either way... Ebony board is what I am going with but have very little experience with these.

Yeah, I offered and he countered off and we made a deal. :) No Floyd, its routed for a Wilkenson and I've had my share of Floyds for the time being. :)

I will know when it comes in but I think it is solid. And I was thinking PAFs, especially from what I've read on Ebony boards.

I understand that ebony is slightly brighter than maple. With mahogany it should sound warm but clear.

Ahh, with a 24.75" scale I would suggest Alnico II Pro's with or without coil splits!

Bias Disclaimer: I am a happy owner of a set of Alnico II Pro's in a 24.75" Warmoth.

That's what I've read too, its been too long since I played an electric guitar with an Ebony board. For acoustics I've found Ebony to be very articulate.

Ha! Nice disclaimer there ;) You know, I haven't personally liked any Alnico II's yet; however, the Mahogany with shorter scale screams Alnico II's to me...decisions decisions... :)

I like the A2P's but not as much as I like my Jazz set, they take a close 2nd place on my list though. I would also suggest the Jazz set but I'd have to throw another bias disclaimer in there somewhere :deal:

Well, I had the Jazz set in an Ibanez Prestige and didn't care for it...but my disclaimer is that it was Mahogany with a Maple cap and had a Rosewood board. So not the guitar I am building.

I love Ceramic and Alnico V pickups...but the only concern is how those would respond to the Ebony board...

Re: New Project - Warmoth Mahogany with Flamed Redwood Top

That is beautiful! It needs a P-90 type in the neck. Like a Mean-90 or a P-Rail and a slightly hotter PAF type in the bridge or a 59/C.

Ahh, an Alnico V or ceramic guy. Ok, that pretty much rules out my third suggestion being the Pearly Gates. The 59 might be worth a try considering the ebony board but there is always the Seth Lover set if you do not plan on coil splits. I'm a Duncan guy, so yeah, there's that disclaimer.

No matter what pickups you choose that guitar is going to be awesome!

Re: New Project - Warmoth Mahogany with Flamed Redwood Top

Wait until you get it together with the rest of the hardware and decide based on it's acoustic properties. However, a Custom/59 Hybrid in the bridge and a 59 in the neck may work really well here based on the woods. It's all going to depend on how that body and neck play together.

EMG 57/66 set in black chrome, and all black nickel/cosmo hardware on the guitar. Black pickup rings and a half-Tele type of guard (kind of like a Cabronita) in translucent gray plastic.

Man, that's gorgeous. Whatever combo you'd choose, please put covered pickups without rings. And no pickguard too.

My Explorer is mahogany w/ ebony board, and currently has a Jazz and Custom; I've also tried both '59 and A2P neck pickups, as well as JB and C5 bridge pickups. I found the A2P too dark (clean tone wasn't great, but OD was pretty sweet) and the C5 I found scooped and shrill. The JB/59 combo was pretty good, but I like the current pickups better. The Custom & JB were pretty similar in the bridge, but the Custom is just a bit more full. I REALLY like the Jazz in the neck since I can get over driven tones that are almost Strat-like.
