Sounds very nice to my ears, I wonder if it will be available in head format.

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

A tube swap will take out that fizz most likely. Not bad sounding as is, but not sure its all that 800ish. Sounds more like a jooby or DSL.

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

Much better than I expected! The biggest things I like are the 12 inch speaker and it still sounds pretty killer in the low watt mode!
Nick Bowcott.. Love that guy. I remember the Grim Reaper days....

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

Sounds nothing like a 220x (which I stopped expectin the moment I saw reverb and channel switching) ... so once again it appears to have been all hype. Too bad, it really sounded interesting a few days ago. :(

I might take a look at one when they hit market, but I think this chapter is effectively closed for me.

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

Where in the specs did it specifiy it being a 220x derivitive? Or was that pure speculation on someone's part based purely on the 100W AFD amp?

I'd like to check one of those out. Looks like it would be a nice practice/jam amp. Hell, it'd probably work out great in small bars too.

Now that you mention it, I´m not too sure where I picked that up either, I think it was the other thread a few days ago....

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

The ad copy from Marshall states that it is based on the AFD100 amp. I cannot post links or I would. Its in the other thread, on the guitarhangar link(which is the marshall ad copy posted to their webpage for the amp)

That where I saw it but I didn't see that anywhere in the specs.

I saw that and the ad copy reads: "Working closely with Slash after the success of the AFD100, it was deemed appropriate to make a more accessible amplifier that is ideal for home or studio use."

That's the only mention of the AFD100. It doesn't say it is based off of it.

It says it is designed to get the tone of that album. marshall.says nail it, in fact.

Albums was a modded 2203, right? AFD100 is a modded 22xx? This SL5 is based on getting the tone those amps produce, right? Its inferred by the ad copy, but does not state it flat out, yes.

That said, I never stated it was supposed to be a 2203. I simply asked whether it was a 1959 or a 2203. And my comment above was "not very 800ish". Which it is not.

Edit- do not mean to sound terse, had to go change a poopy diaper and was typing fast, lol.

And no,not MY poopy diaper.

The cleans were ok, but the OD was set way too high for my playing style, so I can't say how it would sound how I'd probably set it. That said, I'm pretty sure I could get my rock on with one.

I agree, not very 800-ish at all. When making a smaller wattage amp, there's going to be a lot of differences between it and one supposedly sounding the same that is 100 watts. Now, they very well may have taken the AFD100 pre and slapped in the SL5 chasis with some changes here and there. BUT, considering that the AFD100 has 5 ECC83's, 6550 power tubes, single channel with two modes, and no reverb, my guess is it's not even the same design.

Somebody in the other thread stated 2203 but like you, I don't believe it is. There's more than one way to achieve that tone. ;)

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

6550s is spot on for a USA bound Marshall of the time. All of mine had them, except my late 70s JMP.

At any rate, the amp is not very 800ish based on that clip..regardless of how they got there. It sounds very much like the tones of his Jooby copy amp. I think I like the DSL15/40 better..at least based on clips. I would haveto try them. That said, should be a neat amp for the $, but I wouldnt even think of getting rid of my class 5 forthat kind of marshall tone (5w slash).

Doesnt sound bad. I liked the clean alot but the dirt wasnt all that for me or maybe it might of been how he played through it.

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

I don't care if it's based on a broken Walkman.

It's an apartment-friendly all tube channel switching amp with a closed-back V30, and it sounds pretty good.

I'm impressed.

Also: Rebecca Dirks.

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

There are some specs here: http://sixstringsamurai.co.nz/2013/01/22/namm-2013-marshall-slash-signature-afd-5w-amp-to-debut/

I think it infers that it's based on the AFD amp, but doesn't really "guarantee" that you'll get those tones if you know what I mean? It's loosely based on that concept, but with digital reverb etc - household amp type of trimmings, to me.

Also, for better or worse, for that pricepoint I've been told that these amps will be made in China.

They didn't call it the AFD-5 for a reason. It'll get good tones, it may be a great amp, but its no AFD 100

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

Actually sounds not bad for a low wattage ... but $699 ... means probably $800 here.

Tempting, but not at that price range.

Heh, I'll be upset if they could make a 5W, $699 amp sound as good as the full sized head that I paid WAY more for....
