New Stratocaster build!

Nightburst

Documenting the whole process in this thread, maybe someone will find this useful or fun to read.
Had it in my head a long time, now it has become reality. The stratocaster homebrew project is a-go!

What really kicked it off is that I found a good source for a swamp ash body and a rosewood board neck. Both look particularly stunning to me with the grain patterns. If they will be as nice sounding and resonant is a toss up but the least I can do is make it all look and feel great.
Because I am located in Europe it's not so easy to get USA stuff over here for a reasonable price, shipping and customs charges can quickly make any item too expensive. I was lucky to find someone rather locally who sells this quality for a good price.

So what do you do with a beautifully grained swamp ash body? Well, you stain it in a nice deep color of course! I choose cherry red, to pay hommage to the red mustang I was driving while on holiday in California last summer. The idea is to capture that vibe and to be inspired for a long time. Crimson guitars from the UK sells these stains, premixed in a bottle. I highly recommend these 'stunning stains'. I never did this before and got great results. The video's they have are super helpful too for learning some techniques to apply properly and to see how the color will turn out.

Anyway, here are some pictures. Most pictures don't tell the whole story, to do a project like this the right way takes time, effort and a lot of elbow grease. I learned a lot about sanding and staining because I had to do a lot of (re)sanding and (re)staining to get it right!

Behold this beautiful body, it is about to be stained!

Did a test stain on a piece of scrap wood to see how the color turns out in real life. After that I did the body...hmm something is not right, the body doesn't absorb the stain very well... not digging this pink at all!

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Ok, so it turns out the body had been sealed already with some sort of grain filler or poly lacquer. Time to sand, I assumed the body had been sanded to a smooth feeling surface already but nope no luck.
Had to sand the body down completely with 80 grit, took me 3 hours! I skipped the gym that day...

The grain lines were absorbing the red at least, so I was exited to see how it takes the stain this time around. Well...much better!

Re: New Stratocaster build!

After drying overnight, I noticed the grain pattern lines had completely absorbed the dye. The grain pattern lines have these open wood 'pores' that absorb the stain so much, it appears like bare wood again. I see what people mean with saying that swamp ash must have grain filler in order to get the final finish right.
Also some spots around the heel and contours were not sanded down far enough leaving blank spots. Also the stain revealed a lot of sports where I either pressed too hard on the sanding block or did a bad move making scratches all over the body into random directions. I had to deep sand those out and go from 80 to 120 to 400 grit along the grain lines to prevent repeating my earlier mistakes.

Here are some pictures after more sanding and 3 layers of stain, I let the stain dry overnight and did one more layer to fill out the last pores, I really rubbed it in like I meant it this time going against the grain too, sideways and in a circulair motion. At this point the red turned much darker but the pores got saturated finally.

I'm happy with how it turned out, now need to tape off all the cavities and its ready for some clear coat!

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Ok: clear coat... I'm no stranger to spray cans but I always get a little nervous because a screw up means a lot of sanding later. Oh well, it's a beautiful day and I want to get this over with, taped off the spray area in my backyard and made a makeshift spray booth where the wind takes all the vapors away from me. I still used goggles, a mask and gloves.

I decided to use Spraymax 2K semi-gloss, I read good things about it and after watching a few videos from Brad Angove I felt confident to do it.
This is the result after one bottle (400ml) completely emptied. I did thin layers with 10 minutes inbetween, I got around 6 to 7, maybe 8 thin layers out of this can. Enough to completely seal the body and build up bit of finish, though its still a thin layer in the end.
Because it was quite windy, I wasn't very efficient. You can probably get way more out of one can in more ideal circumstances.

Oh no, I messed up a bit! Need to sand it down after it hardens and hope I can buff out the cloudy spot. Doesn't look too bad but still a lot of extra work for later. Bummer.

Here is a pic of the body after a couple hours of drying, I like it!

Re: New Stratocaster build!

All of your pic links are broken!!!
Other than your first post I can’t see any pics.
Bummer

Re: New Stratocaster build!

I kinda like the open-poreness of it all. I think I'd seal it, but not do a shiny coat.

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Nightburst, that beautiful piece of Ash is looking really great. I've done one refinish myself too, and the sanding and sanding and sanding is the worst part for sure. I love the color you picked and I can't wait for the final product. Is the clear coat a poly or a lacquer? Please tell me you're going to continue to build up the clear coat and then wet sand and buff it to a high gloss shine! It will make that red look crimson and so wet and beautiful. Are you going with a maple board?

Great work so far. I'm watching this one closely.

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Thanks guys!

Yeah I am also curious how it will turn out eventually. The clear coat is spraymax 2K, poly I think. Definitely not nitro. It's semi-gloss so I can choose to leave it or buff it to high gloss later if I want to. Not decided yet.

It dried overnight and is still slightly sticky. I am going to put a few more coats on top of it, but I want to use the 2nd can to finish off the neck too. If anyone knows a good source for custom headstock decals, I'd love to hear about it. I'm going for a devil girl pinup theme. So far I can only find pictures that are too big to fit on the headstock. I should decide quickly as I don't think its good to leave too much time in between clear coats?

By the way, this is the neck. I love the grain on this rosewood! Yes I know its a bit dry on the picture, already addressed that with lemon oil.

Here are a few links. Some let you make Fender looking waterslides but with your custom name, others are more fanciful. You can also find some on eBay, Reverb, Easy, and do on.

It looks great so far. When dealing with the waterslide and clear coat on the headstock, I wouldn't rush it or worry about time between clearcoats. You can spray the headstock any time and not worry about blending with the rest of the neck being a problem. Take your time and find the exact waterslide that will make you happy. It will be worth the wait.

Keep up the great work man, it really looks sharp. Oh, have you thought about the pickguard color yet? I'm a little traditional, but something in cream.... even aged just a bit would look great with that color!

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Mucho thanks for the decal links Jeff! I really like the font types on the first link, I hope I can get them to do the decal I want.

With careful sanding and scraping I fixed the clear coat run on the lower horn. Some spots I sanded through just so slightly so I gave those areas another wipe with the 'stunning stains'. If I shoot another coat over this it will look like it never happened or at least not bad enough to bother me.

Now as what the rest will look like? I made a little mock-up to see where I'm going, I like this one so far but it's not uncommon for me to change my mind in the process :) Any ideas or suggestions are always welcome of course.

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Of course it's your guitar, but I think something in the off white/cream/pearloid family will highlight the red color much better than the black. To me, black soaks up too much of the visible light when you look at it, which takes away from the beautiful wood grain and stain. Again, just my opinion. You do what YOU like best. You're doing all the hard and beautiful work.

Re: New Stratocaster build!

You should of done a nightburst.

This thread is good i love that grain. :scratchch I have a white cedar build that has very wide growth patterns and i want to do a similar style stain but with black and yellow. I like how the growth lines are sunk in i did something similar on that ash jackson body of Beer$ but in all black.

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Yeah, I'll go for the black anyway sorry to disappoint ya Jeff! :D It just screams more 'bad-ass' to me. I might put a black cover on the 'middle' pickup to get a faux zebra going on there. I like that idea a lot actually.

Today I sprayed another can of clear over the body, now it has a nice thick coat of poly and pretty much all of the grain looks sealed. I got 3-4 good wet coats on top of it all around with 10 minutes in between and sprayed some extra on the horn areas to give me a sanding margin later.
I am confident I can sand it once its all dry and hardened up without risking a burn through anywhere. I'll keep it semi-gloss, it looks right to me but I'l polish it until it also feels right. Can't wait to finish it but should give it at least a week, maybe 2 before I start sanding.
The lower horn fix I did earlier turned out great, you can barely see that it ever happened.

In case anyone was wondering, I did not scuff up the body before I sprayed another can on the body. This is a recommended procedure normally because the poly is supposed to 'mechanically' stick to the surface. Well the body had enough pores for the poly to adhere to, can't tell there was 2-3 days between the 2 cans. I doubt it will cause any issues but you never know of course.

@kramersteen: that reminds me that I should really change my forum name to something else, I picked this name when I joined in 2004 because I was gassing badly for one of those SG's.
Would love to see your project once you start going for it! Wood grains are like flames, you can look at it endlessly and not get bored.

Re: New Stratocaster build!

Wow that thread is a huge one. Pretty cool you build your own body shape and all! Thats a lot of work.
