New to soldering. New pup install has pretty loud feedback/hum

Hey everyone,

Every soldering adventure I make, I come here for some help! This is my 4th time soldering .

I switched out an Ibanez pickup for a Dimarizo Crunchlab just in the bridge. Everything went well to my knowledge.

When testing it with an amp( No strings on yet, just using a screwdriver) I noticed the bridge pup when rolled to ten had a very noticeable hum/feedback. The neck was dead silent and good to go.

So of course, I trouble shooted. I re-did every solder I did again. I even took the time to fix up the grounding pool of solder mess from the factory and made it neater.

Still, same issue. I bought the pup used, but I don't think and hope that isn't the issue.

When I hear feedback like this I assume its a grounding issue? Anyone have any clues where to start?

Its a 2 humbucker guitar with a 5 way blade.

Thanks in advance!

Does it disappear when you touch the pickup or the pots with your finger?

test it with strings on, plugged in to an amp.

next, please clarify if you're getting feedback or a hum. those are two different things.

some diagrams:

also, if you're having persistent issues, have you looked up any thing about soldering techniques and/or tips? or do you think this is more a matter of getting the right wires to the right spots?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the quick replies.

I'll have to test touching the pot again. I did however notice that the hum got louder when touching the soldering done on the 5 way switch.

Also, it is hum! Sorry to just throw both terms out there. It doesn't feedback, just hums very loud.

Thank you for the diagrams! I have researched it and feel confident its wired correctly, just perhaps the soldering job isn't so great.

I have watched plenty of youtube videos on how to solder. In my opinon(Which isn't worth much) It all looks alright. So I'm not quite sure what the issue is

Well if you've checked diagrams and you're confident that the correct wires are going to the correct spots, then there can only be a problem with your soldering, or there is a short in the wiring. All it takes is one strand of the hot wire touching a ground or another wire.

Yes, you need to check it all again.

Slightly off topic, but instead of a screwdriver, first plug into your amp. Then get a TV remote (or any RF remote) and point it at the pickup and press a button on the remote. Different buttons will make different spacey sounds and it is easier to hear the volume and tone roll off as you turn the knobs.

just start from scratch and go through it all again. trust me, you are far from the first person to have to do that. lol! maybe get a spare piece of wire and a random old knob or potentiometer or switch and just practice a little bit with a few different techniques to see what gives you the best results.

what is the temp of your soldering iron set for? or perhaps, what's the wattage?

are you tinning the points you are going to solder and do you use flux?

This sounds pretty cool actually
