New tubes = BLISS!

Hey all,

at the beginning of the week I re-tubed my YCV40 with Tungsol 12AX7s and GT 6L6R (yeah I know, really just Sovtek 5881s with a warranty) and the result was astounding. two of the AX7s had been in my amp since I bought it in October '07 and V1 was a EH AT7 I had put in about a year and a half ago (at which time I also put new power tubes in). Unsurprisingly, since replacing all the tubes on Monday, there is far more clean head room (break up now start around 6.5 on ch. 2), and the amp is louder than it's been in awhile. I gigged with it once this week and it was plenty loud at 3, and I've been in tone heaven all week.

I'd like to thank everyone here who's posted about different types of tubes and their results using them, as without such knowledge I wouldn't have even known what tubes are or the difference between them.

You realize you have caught the bug now don't you?

Don't let the opinion of others effect you so much. When it comes to tubes and sound overall, do what your own ears tell you to do.

When it comes to sound I do follow my ears, however before owning a tube amp I never really knew anything about them, except that they were better than SS amps. I read about amps and what tubes they have here that I would then notice at shows and having read what amps have what tubes I'd know what was making the sound I heard. It helped later on when I was looking to buy my first tube amp, and then when changing tubes.

Anyway yea, fresh tubes are sweet. I just got my bassman re-tubed and rebiased at my shop last week...sounds better than ever but it really deserves a nicer cab than the $100 Sunn i've been using :smokin:

You still doin the 2x10 on a 2x12 thing or have you realized the truth and gotten a cabinet of proper capacity?

BTW, what's wrong with the Sunn cab? I thought you loved it? If it sounds good then who cares that you got it for $100?

No more 2x10! I met a guitarist at an open jam with a YCV40 1x12 and wanted to trade it for a 2x10, so we made the trade and swapped our own chassis into our new cabs as his standby switch didn't work. So I'm now running either 1x12, 2x12 or 3x12. It not only sounds much better, but also looks cooler IMO.

Don't you think?
