Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

I'm wondering does Fender make any newer combo amps that you tone guru's have any love for? Or is it all about blackface and Tweed?

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

i like the pro and blues juniors too. they arent perfect but for the money they are good little amps.

the reissues of the deluxe, super, and twin reverbs are good as are the bassman ltd and tweed twin ri. the vibroverb is cool too. i dont think any of them sound as good as the real things but they are much less expensive. if you want a real great bassman but new, then pay for a victoria or other boutique amp. i havent tried the '57 deluxe ri but i assume that it is decent.

some people really like the supersonics, i tried one and it was nice but not my bag

new fender amps that i love, the vibroking w/the 2x12 cab is about my favorite thing they make

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

Cool,
I'm just looking for a cool amp with great cleans that can take to pedals well. I already have a Mesa Mark IV combo, but sometimes I just hate fiddling around with the eq on that guy and would love a plug and play situation. Not to mention an EQ that behaves more traditionally.

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

Fender Champ, Great cleans. It takes pedals well, all around great amp. If you want a little more power with the same level of simplicity get a pro junior. Thats what I use and its a great amp. They both would sound great with your guitars.

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

Fender Prosonic. It won't take pedals well and doesn't have the greatest clean headroom but will absolutely eat your Mesa alive on the crunches!! Bruce Zinky created a MONSTER it's best small combo on the planet!!

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

bassman reissues are cool and would probably be your best bet for pedals and junk.

I like the Supersonic combo but would rather get the half-stack. I've actually thought of getting the blonde half stack, and an additional 4x12 supersonic cab in black for my 68 head...have two Fender half stacks :smokin:

Blues Jr. is perfect for smaller stuff...i was able to get amazing cleans AND crunch with a Blues Jr. and a 72 tele deluxe reissue once in a music store. i wanted to trade my bassman for it at the time, if that says anything for it's tone...decided selling a 50 watt head for a (what is it? 7?) watt combo wasn't worth it in the long run.

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

The Bassman looks good to me, perhaps a bit heavy weight wise but worth a play to be sure.
As for the Supersonic, I'm not really interested in a gain monster, in fact my Mark IV has more gain than I'll ever use.
How are the HRDeluxes? or the Vibroverb with their cleans and taking pedals. I'm thinking that a 40 watter will give me enough clean headroom to be happy with since i play clean mostly.

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

i'm pretty sure drew half empty used to have an HRD that he ran pedals into and thought was good. Hot Rod's are basically ramped-up Bassmans with 'dirty' channels tho...and if you've got your gain meets met, i'd just go for the original.

What this guy said, with one addition: I have a bit of a soft spot for the Custom Vibrolux reverb.

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

For $600 bucks, the Blues Deluxe Reissue has a great clean channel and can take any pedal really well...

Just pretend it doesnt have a gain channel, cuz it blows. THe clean channel is worth the $ alone though.

i dont think the hot rods hold a candle to the vintage reissue series and i wouldnt describe them as ramped up bassmans, or ramped up anything really. they are decent amps for the buck if you want that feature set in something fairly reliable but i dont think the tone is there

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

I've got 2 Blues Jr.s, & use 'em stereo. Not great cleans, but good. Turned up, they're little monsters. I'd like to upgrade to a pair of Deluxe Reverbs, eventually.

Yep, I've got a 95 Blues Deluxe and it's the same - great cleans, great with a Tubescreamer, woeful gain channel.

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

the old ones were american made and from what i understant the trannys were a little better but the new ones are still pretty cool

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

I like the old stuff. But you guys knew that! (laugh!) Did a gig this tuesday night where I played through both of my blackface Deluxe Reverbs.

Lew,
The Deluxe reverbs seem like a good fit for me wattage wise, but I am a bit concerned about the clean headroom. Also, how do the re-issues stack up to the older models. I know the blackface gear is the bomb, but do the re-issues even get in the ballpark?

IMO, a great 12" speaker like the Celestion G12H-30 is a MUST for gigging with a DR. Makes the amp sound like it has another 10 watts of output and really improves the clean headroom.

Most guys I suggest the DR to are afraid it won't have enough volume. But the truth is: a DR is perfect for about 95% of the gigs I do and anything else would be to loud.

It's rare that we guitarists get to turn up our 30 - 50 watt amps to a volume at which they overdrive a little and sound good at.

When I used to show up with my 40 or 50 watt amp, it was to loud about 90-95% of the time. And so I had to use an overdrive pedal or play to loud or play to quiet and get a lousy plinky thin sounding tone.

No more. The Deluxe Reverb with an efficient speaker like the Celestion G1H-30 is the ticket.

I like the older ones from the 60's and early 70's best...and you can work on them and mod them more easily than the reissue.

All of my DR's have been modded by replacing the standard treble and bass capacitors with a pair of .02 caps like is used in tweed Bassmans and Marshalls.

As for vintage styled, I like the Vibroking, Bassman LTD, Bassbreaker, and the Super and Deluxe Reverbs. I also really like the Diaz modded 64 Vibroverb.

As for modern featured Fenders, go right to the Pro Tube Series models like the Supersonic, Concert Reverb, Twin, Pro Reverb (modern versions), and Prosonic. Those are the 2 channel Fenders that all sound good.

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

I must say that I love my White Lightening. It has it's flaws, but the Celestion speaker sounds great and is just what I needed. Probably going to replace the tubes to get a little less headroom for smaller gigs and just boost it with my Sparkle Drive if need be for larger ones. Great amp, in my opinion.
