Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

Re: Newer Fender Tube combo that you love?

The DR RI and the SRRI IMHO are overpriced and lacking in tone. I have a buddy that owns a DRRI and I have a 67 DR. No comparison. But as Lew said with mods they can be made to sound really good. IMHO you would be better off buying a SFSR or DR. They are about the same money as the RI, but sound a lot better providing you buy the one from the correct years. STAY AWAY FROM THE MASTER VOLUME SERIES. These amps IMHO don't deserve the name Fender. The early Silvers are as good and in some cases better than a BF. '67,68,69. All pretty good years. Then skip to 72 thru I think 74 (not sure when they added the Master volume and a whole lot of other stuff that got in the way of good tone).

As far as new amps. I think the hot rod series of amps have good value. You can find a HRD sed for around 400$. Its a pretty decent amp, but they lack headroom. The Deville and the other one I forget the name of are a little better and have better headroom. But I agree that the best "new" Fender is the Vibro King. This amp is made in the same way all the "old" Fenders were point to point and really good solid construction.

I'm really happy with the used DRRI (Jenson speaker) I picked up for $600. All I did was swap out the power and preamp tubes for Tung Sols, put a CV4024 in the PI slot, biased it hot (to 28ma) and it makes for a great apartment amp. Really amazing fender cleans even at low volumes 2-3. I hardly ever fiddle with the controls and I can't stop playing it even after the two months I've had it. Still looking for the right OD pedal though - I think the stock speaker does amazing cleans but doesn't take OD pedals well.
