to complete my amp quest i plan to get either one of the following combo amps in the next 9 months: laney tt 50 watt or koch twintone II 50 watt.

i'm kind of leaning towards the koch, but the price of the laney makes it a little more appealing. what do you guys think?

Re: Next Conquest - Laney TT 50 Combo OR...

Well ..... the Laney crowd did not really embrace the TT .... I've also read that it has a tab bit less gain than VH100 too .... Reading you posts on JVM and listening to your clip I would advise toward VC50 its a basically a 50 watt combo version of VH100, especially so if you get one from the first half of the nineties. Its not channel jumper as TT is but the tone is there .... here you go.

oh man i love paul gilbert. that's one of my favorite tunes, but i never noticed that he used a laney in that video. holy crap he sounds good. i always thought he used marshalls. hmm... it does have the kind of british marshally sound though.

i couldn't find a vc 50 on musicians friend, but i found hte tt 50. i just figured they were similar. what is it about the tt 50 that sucks, or how is hte vc50 better? is it more expensive than the tt?

thanks mahavasi

to complete my amp quest

What exactly is your "amp quest?" First it was Marshall, then Mesa, then Fender Super Sonic, then Mesa again, then Marshall again, then Genz Benz, now Laney? What next week, Peavey?

Re: Next Conquest - Laney TT 50 Combo OR...

i'll try to make this real simple so you can understand. it all comes down to money. within the intended budget, i can aspire to buy things in that price range. if i were to run into some money, then the things i really want become accessible. the supersonic and the mesa were affordable alternatives to what i really wanted - the jvm.

i'm aware that i don't have to explain my reasoning to you for anything i do to you or anyone, but i prefer to end this stupid subject before it starts. furthermore, if i were to run into a lot of money, i'll go out and buy a handwired marshall, soldano, hiwatt, or something else i aspire to own. i'm sure i'm not the only person to do that.

Wow. A little defensive, aren't we? Just trying to get a better handle on what tones and features you're after before making any recommendations. Without that info it's kind of a free-for-all.

But thanks for "keeping it simple" for us dumb folk. As for the "stupid subject," it's your thread. Just trying to contribute.

For some reason VC50 was discontinued, so look on craigs, ebay, etc. The Laney crowd on internet that owened/owns TT says something along the lines of "its what laney it hoped would be" "sterile" "a bit thin" no major bad reviews, just kind of meh. Check out www.Laneyforum.com www.laney-posse.co.uk that's where I've read about it. From the post AOR era, VH100/VC50 is the favorite hands down. Guilbert played VH100R/VC50 for about 10 years at least than about 6 months ago or so he switched to vintagemodern - bustard, I assume he wanted a sig model, but Laney keeps saying that the only person who got a sig model was Iommi, so I guess that's where falling out began, if it was I really dont get what's the big deal, Iommi's sig is just modded GH100, I am sure Gilbert's would have been heavily based on VH100R, go figure ... hope it helps.

thanks man, i'm going to check out that forum. to be honest though, i really liked gilbert's tone on the vintage modern. then again, that guy can sound good on a friggin battery powered mini amp.

Re: Next Conquest - Laney TT 50 Combo OR...

Ill agree about the VC50 vs TT50. I keep hearing all those same things about the tt series, but what really bothers me is the wierd high-mids that are hardwired into the tone. The VC50 is much more versatile, I had one before I bought my Peavey. I want to trade it back for the VH100R, but im in no hurry. It has 2 channels with a boost for each. Great amp, but be careful with speakers.

i'll try to keep this simple for you too brute: money accumulates over time. If you save it, you have more of it. If you want a handwired Marshall or Soldano, why don't you relax on all the great equipment you've got now, save your pennies until you've got the cash for what you want, then get it?

i mean it's YOUR money and you can spend it how you want, it just seems like you'd be saving yourself a lot of stress if you just got what you wanted.

That said: Every Laney I've ever played has absolutely rocked the house. Their AOR series is probably the best bang-for-buck amp out there right now.

Re: Next Conquest - Laney TT 50 Combo OR...

oh man, i hate explaining my self. these kind of resopnses are a waste of friggin time. simple answer - i'm not a saver. maybe i want to buy a good amp now, and if the opportunity comes along to pick up a better amp, then i'll take it. i don't have stress because of it - i love it. i love great sounding equipment.

so to move on from what the reasons are why i do things, and back to the actual subject matter, i'm interested in a laney combo and the tt 50 sounds like a good one.

Well considering your only option is ebay unless you get really lucky, $400-500 would be a great price. Got mine for 500, was in decent condition. They are becoming very scarce though..

Dont think about it as money in arithmetic sense but in a VALUE sense. Laney crowd is a bit fanatical as you can judge by some members of the forum :) so when several internet resources that have Laney regulars yield unfavorable reviews of TT I would take it into account. Then comes VC50 which has documented catalog of great pieces by a great master of the instrument and positive reviews by a same loyal users population that gave unfavorable review to a TT .... now look at the difference in price and think where the VALUE is, as interms of your utility as a musician per dollar?

TT series is a three channel, double master volume, el34 amp. The VH series is 5881 based 2 channel with boost on each.

The TT is supposed to be more tonally versatile but the VH series works great and sounds best. I have a rare VC100 combo and it rocks.

ps, dont start talking down to people, it wont help make friends
