NG(s)D! 7-string Ibanezeseses

Hi guys!

Not really a regular poster, but i got myself 2 7 stringers from ibanez these past few months. Moved a couple of axes like my parker, strats, some bcriches and ltd 407 and these got these axes for relatively cheap.

First is the RG7620. Got it for under 400USD (according to currency converter anyways :D). Hard to get one here in Singapore, especially for this price. It's actually my second one. sold the first, regretted it immensely, and when this popped up for cheap, I grabbed it!

Had installed Blackhawks in there, but didn't cut through the band mix so put back the stock pups. I actually don't mind the stock pup, so I may leave them there for a while until I can sell the Blackhawks and grab new pups. Any suggestions?

The second is the Apex 1. got it for USD590 (SGD750) there about. This was a steal as I saw one on sale at a store for SGD4.5k! This was a red one, but I imagine the biker black finish wouldn't be too far off.

Stock PAF7. I really like the pickups and the playability, but I haven't tested it in band context, so that may change. The U-bar is simply a bad idea. Hinders my palm muting and really serves no purpose other than to piss me off :angryfire.

All my axes are in Drop A. Its just a fun tuning to play!

Group Shot!

Nice nice. The 7620 has become something of a classic; I've seen people asking up to $900-1000 for clean examples.

About the pups, depends on what kind of stuff you play. SD has come out with all sorts of 7-8 string pups recently aimed at the metal crowd, so there's plenty of options there; other old 'faves' like the JB, Custom, Jazz, 59, Full Shred, Invader etc. are also readily available as 7. One thing about Duncans though is that they have square feet on the baseplate, whereas the Ibanez guitars with body mounted pups at the time were routed for smaller triangular feet a la stock Ibanez pups and DiMarzio, so some modding would be required for Duncans.

Got an Apex too eh? I like Munky's alder HS one; don't give a sh!t about Korn but it seems like a cool axe. Yeah, the U-bar; I think you can take it out and put a regular trem arm straight in.

Hi Ashurbanipal.
Yeah. Thinking about the duncan distortion as thats my go to pup. But I'm not sure how it will sound in basswood. Never had any luck with basswood body guitars in terms of making it sound good. Or the other option is to put the pafs in the 7620 and put distortions in the apex. Or I might sell it and get a les paul instead :D

I thought the 7620 would be my favourite neck profile of all time, until I got the Apex! It's slightly chunkier feeling, but feels solid as hell. Tone is thick and fat and is a dream to play.

Nice RGD Grindspine! Almost grabbed one, but then I saw the Apex instead heh.

^^ I find that higher output pups work well in basswood, and I've talked with one pro luthier about this who concurs. I have an old basswood HH Roadstar in which I kept the stock bridge pu, a 13k triple ceramic thing, and it sounds quite evil. My go-to pups are low-mid output but having a hot one in a guitar is fun.

I am really enjoying the RGD. I never had the chance to get my hands on an APEX or K7, but do like the whole U-bar idea on the trem. I also really dig the neck on the RGD. The 26.5" neck doesn't feel weird, even when switching from my 24.75" 6 string.

I will say that the Distortion sounds great in maple/alder; I have a TB-6 at the bridge of my main six string. I was worried that the RGD's pickups would not hold up when switching between the guitars, but so far they are. The Ibanez V87 seems like it is maybe a touch lower output than the Distortion, it does stay tight and has good definition though.

What stock pickups are in those seven stringers?

Yeah, I was thinking that. But the Blackhawks I had were rather high output, but I couldn't cut though the mix, even with mids maxed out. Alone it sounded fantastic, but it got lost once everyone played together. Might be the design, so I'm looking towards the JB or Distortion. Again haha.

Hey Grindspine. The Apex has Paf7 and the RG 7620 has a dimarzio7, sorta like the poormans blaze they say. I like it, but its very noisy and feedbacks very easily. Muddy too.

The Ubar is a bad design, believe me. I try to palm mute,, its like trying to fit my fat butt on a small chair with arm rests.

I think 26.5 is not too far fro 25.5, so the difference wont be too noticeable. Though it have been a better choice since im dropping the low B to A.

BTW, I'm using baritone strings from Daddario, 13-64 I think, and adding another 11 for the high E. Sounds damn nice and fat. What guage strings are you guys using?
