Re: NGBD (new guitar build day) 4 1/2
I really have had great success using Planet Waves locking tuners and if I ever decide to change these that is what I'll use. Plus they look great and trim the exess wire automatically.
I've only had the chance to play her for about an hour, but she sounds wonderful. I like the full rich tonal quality of the Alt 8 in the bridge...very smooth but articulate. Not as articulate as the Distortion, but much smoother and a slightly fuller sound. In fact, it sounds massive but not out of control. The neck is a tad smoother but with more clarity and very articulate...individual notes are clear as a bell but they don't have the bite that you think of with a C/59 hybrid thanks to the A2. (I've always loved the sound of the C/59 hybrid but it was just a little too trebly/biting for what I play. With an A2 it is mellow and smooth but with definition).
The middle single coil pup gives it a VERY Strat-like sound, but at nearly 8k it does sound hot, but still bright and bell-like. At positions 2 and 4 it has a really great quack but a little fuller than a typical vintage Strat quack.
I havent had a chance to run it through my pedalboard yet to see how it takes overdrives, boosters, fuzz, chorus, etc. but this weekend I'll have some quality time to spend with her (as long as I also spend some quality time with the mrs.).
As far as wiring...So far, nothing very interesting (meaning that there is nothing out of the ordinary, but it does indeed sound very interesting) I just have typical 5 way switch wiring with 50's wiring to the tone pot (one vol, one tone). I'm thinking about putting a Triple Shot on the neck pup so I can split to either the '59 coil or the Custom coil to see how either of those sound paired with the middle single coil in the 4 position.
I will keep the Alt 8 in series humbucker configuration for now because it sounds sooo great in this guitar. But give me more time with it and that can possibly change too. Too early to know yet.
