NGD - 1979 Guild 12 String Acoustic

Re: NGD - 1979 Guild 12 String Acoustic

Thanks! It has an awesome sound to it...rings and rings. I'm amazed at how the guitar stays in tune so well--from the store Ive only had to tune one of the low E strings and one of the B strings, the rest have been in tune since i first picked it up at the music store.

And yup, Tom Petty's sure does, I've seen some YouTube videos of his concerts using one.

I bought a Guild 12-er a few years back, just because of hearing Petty's tone on one. Congrats!

Those Guilds from the 1970s were great acoustic guitars. Congrats on finding this one!

Just picked this up today and can't put it down! 1979 Guild 12 String with the original case. The harmonics on this thing are amazing and the sustain just rings and rings.

FWIW, the guitar is actually a 1976 and not a '79. The guitar needs some repair and will probably take about 3 months, maybe longer. Thanks to Jolly, a luthier who worked at the Fender/Guild plant will do a neck reset, refret, take the bridge off and reglue it, replace the nut and saddle, and refinish the guitar. According to Thane, the soundbox is in incredible shape. It sounds incredible but is super hard to play. Looks like this will be my Christmas present to myself. lol

Re: NGD - 1979 Guild 12 String Acoustic

Just wow, and congrats man!

I can feel some major G.A.S. coming on. I have just about every guitar I want at this point, but I'm still hoping for a Guild F-212XL some day.

Thanks! I never really thought of Guild much, but got this last December and while I love the tone it is just too hard to play regularly. So hopefully once Thane is finished with the Warmoth Warhead project then he can get this amazing 12 string back into top notch shape. And out of all of the 12 strings I've ever played, none have come close to sounding as good as these Guilds.

Just wow, and congrats man!

Thanks! I would definitely recommend the F212XL...just amazing tone!

Liked the X-79's too!!!

Re: NGD - 1979 Guild 12 String Acoustic

I recall old Guild acoustic ads from the 70s with Heart and Judas Priest both using them.

Might get myself one someday.

And of course, with acoustics, age makes wood sound so much better, so the longer a life you can give it, the better the tone. Hopefully the surgery won't change it too much (I played a '68 Gibson Dove at a local shop some years ago that had done a neck reset and reseated the bridge - the guitar was dead. No sustain, no ring. Like it had a blanket stuffed in it. I don't think these guys knew what they were doing.)

I would highly recommend one! I love the tone of this one–it has aged (tonally) so well!

Hopefully the work won't kill it...its being done by a former employee and the Guild shop and his workshop of recent repairs shows that he has redone others without them dying...fingers crossed :) Also, Thane (luthier doing the work) said that the tone/sound box is in incredible shape with out any braces coming loose so he recommended getting the neck and bridge work done on it. So I will take that as good news :)

Ebony or RW board?

Like it matters,just wondered...
:p

Ha! This one looks (up cloase) and feels like Rosewood...it needs to be cleaned up as there is a lot of wear and grime on it.

Yeah, I never really cared for the way Guilds played, but I always wanted a Guild 12. Didn't like the way they played, either, but like you said, it would've been worth it. Congrats on the score!

Thanks! This one has a super thick neck BUT its a 12 string :duh: lol Thane is confident that it can be brought back to good action with a neck reset and bridge adjustment. The tone though is just amazing!
