NGD: 2011 Melody Maker

Re: NGD: 2011 Melody Maker

That blue is a perfect match to the background of the forum. You plan to keep it as-is or are you going to hot rod it?

How the hell do I flip the pic?

Ayrton- I’m adding a tone knob, and maybe going to a P90. What would you do?

Christopher- See above :)

Re: NGD: 2011 Melody Maker

Removed all the strings, pulled the pickup. The guy said it was a Dirty Fingers. It's marked "Gibson USA" and "T" on the bottom.

Gonna remove the stickers, oil the board, then re-string with SIT 11-50, tuned Eb. I'm gonna give the 'bucker a little time, but ultimately I see a P90 in there.

P-rails JB - P-Rails!

P-Rails is definitely on the table. I wanna give the stock pickup a good run first, though, then maybe an alnico magnet before changing it.

Forgot to mention, it has a Badass bridge.

So, after a few days of playing this thing a bunch...

I think I like it. The neck shape is good, and it feels really good with my setup (11s at Eb, a little higher than medium action). The neck is set super flat, so I still need to give it a little relief. I don't know if it's a psychosomatic thing, but for whatever reason I'm happier with a little more curve.

I have really mixed feelings about the one volume, one pickup thing. I keep wanting to reach for the switch or the tone knob. Maybe I've just been playing a Strat too long :)

My preferred setup is only one volume, but with a very bright guitar or pickup I've thought that a slight notch in the highs could be nice. I'd personally rather have a push/pull with a cap on it than another knob, I don't like the look. I will say that LPs do the two knob look the best of any guitars.

Aren't these all maple? I can't imagine a P90 or any single not being a bit shrill. Gibson makes some nice medium output humbuckers, and I always, always push the Carvin C22B. They're like $20 used.

Re: NGD: 2011 Melody Maker

If it's a Dirty Fingers, those things are a hell of a lot of fun. I finally pulled a pair out of my LP Tribute but I'll find something else to put one or both into, one day.
