NGD Epi Les Paul Ultra. Questions About The Nano Mag.

So I picked up a Ultra today and it’s pretty jacked up. I’m sure the previous owner had some issues with the Nano Mag as some of the wires are yanked and cut. I’m thinking about just removing everything having to do with it. The pre amp and battery compartment is attached to the control cover. Is the cover the same size as a regular cover so I can just replace it with a non Ultra cover?

Wow, that's too bad. Maybe you can source a good diagram and parts to fix it? I always liked the sound of that model, and it would be a shame for it to not work.

that nano mag is the one thing I would buy an Ultra for
I have had one in my Shopping cart several times just for that

without it its just a great guitar
and who wants that?

Well I know the Nano Mag was plagued with problems and seems kind of gimmicky to me. Really not something I think I would use, but a light hollow chambered Les Paul is something that interests me.

If you're going to spend that much coin on a LP you might as well make it a Gibson for a tad more.

"Custom Shop" Epi stuff is mere marketing jargon.

You'll never get your money back no matter what its still a $400 guitar.

I bought it for $80. Broken Nano Mag. Broken tuner, non functioning selector switch and output jack. I’m just getting it playable again. I like the satin neck, the alnico pickups, and the weight. I will have a fantastic rocker when I’m done for a little over $100.

lol. It turned out to be a quick fun project. The idea was to get it up and running with little to no money so I wasn’t about to get all crazy trying to get the Nano Mag on line. I ended up shaping a bone blank I had on hand to fill the space where the Nano pickup was, then cut some Sapele wood pieces for the control covers. Replaced the broken Grover tuners with Klusons. Re soldered some of the funky wiring after removing all the Shadow Electronics. Got her all cleaned re strung and set up. It’s now a fantastic Les Paul with a unique acoustic tone. I dig it! The belly cut and satin neck with the light weight make it very enjoyable to play. Cleans sound beautiful and overdriven it really roars!

Re: NGD Epi Les Paul Ultra. Questions About The Nano Mag.

I started on a Montgomery Ward Catalog Teisco ET-200 for a first electric in the 1970's.
I was dirt poor & the only one in my family that had talent to speak of so i was on my own.

I would have taken your guitar over that & been very happy.
Not sure id buy it now tho.

Im downsizing anyway.
People now have no idea how good they got it with gear choices.

I had one exactly like that. Same model. Was my first electric guitar. I remember how excited I was to hear what I was playing amplified for the first time.

The wires to the battery connector were cut, and there was no battery connector. The battery compartment door is missing. I did not try and test the Nano Mag so I cannot say if it works or not.

While I still own the guitar I’d like to hang on to it in case I get a wild hair, but if I punt it I’ll send the goodies your way.

Well, that is one cool guitar. But I'd see if I can score a gutted Nano Mag pickup to transplant. It really sounds cool.

I'd like to have an Epi control plate with a battery compartment![emoji6]

Congrats!!

Likewise. I am in the neverending search for someone who traded out active pups in their Epi paul for passive, so that I can have their battery-box control plate
