Re: NGD: Gibson LP.. Nah, just kidding! A Chibson.

I don't have a problem with not seeing eye to eye with anyone on that topic, as I'm sure you don't either, this is a discussion no an argument.

Good point about the kits, I'll admit to a double-standard here, seeing as they don't sell a product, either finished counterfeit or rebranded copy but the material to, if you want and have the ability, copy it yourself.. But I agree, still a grey zone. The person that ends-up making the copy doesn't (theoretically) profit from said copy.

Another way I could twist the issue would be to ask (since you brought up the circuit protection aspect): are counterfeits not cool due to the unlawful aspect of them (since they infringe trademarks, contrary to circuits which can't be protected) or due to the deceitful aspect of the "perfect copy"? Or are g.
Me, neither. I'll admit I have some fairly interesting (read: odd) world views. It's a good thing politics is a forbidden topic here. LOL

They don't sell a finished product, but they sell the boards and parts specifically to make a particular design and make money on that, so to me it's not very different than what Joyo does. And, seriously, how many companies out there have Tube Screamer clones. But they're not breaking the law or defrauding the customer, so I'm not going to fret over it. Heck, I own a Joyo Analog Chorus, I've built a GGG Script Phase90 kit, and I've had a GGG Violet Ram's Head BMP kit half done in a box for a while.

I think the problem with counterfeits is worse than just copying a design in the sense that most people don't know any better so they'll buy something with Gibson on the headstock thinking they got a real one but it's a vastly inferior product. So, that's bad for the customer, but also bad for the company in the sense that people buying these fakes thinking their real will go "Wow, all that money spent and Gibson is a pile of poo!". Gibson has enough QC issues of their own, they don't need somebody else sullying their reputation further. And that goes for anybody who's been counterfeited, be it Fender, Marshall, Samsung, Sony, Motorola, etc. Heck, there's counterfeit iPhones out there running some sort of ganked up ARM hardware with a heavily skinned Android distribution to look like iOS. I'm by no means an iOS fan but I don't feel that's good for customer or company.

For the record, I personally feel (and this is my opinion as a person, not reflective of SDUGF or Seymour Duncan) Henry J should take a long walk off a short plank for what he's done to Gibson, but I don't feel that breaking the law by counterfeiting his products is any better than what he's done. I'd rather put my money in the pockets of somebody honest than somebody dishonest trying to rip off somebody disingenuous.

I get ridiculed on a daily basis why should today be any different?

Awww, now we've found each other... <3

Re: NGD: Gibson LP.. Nah, just kidding! A Chibson.

I think the line is clearly with the label
minus that and its a non issue

there was a forum member here a while back that was "making a Signature Fender"
and was quizzing other members about how to fake the signature

I found this to be deceptive

there is at this moment a partscaster for sale in the Trading Post
with what is described as Warmoth neck with a Fender logo

this, to me, is still deceptive

Re: NGD: Gibson LP.. Nah, just kidding! A Chibson.

I didn't pay anything for the guitar, I got it in a trade. For a counterfeit it sure does play well and sound great if dialed in right, and there's no dead notes or fretboard warping or any issues some Chibson owners had. Surprisingly this guitar is issue free, aside from my old strap falling off occasionally. Plus it definitely does weigh like a real Paul should. I prefer my guitars to be heavy, but not super heavy. This one is just right. Plus the neck feels great and is really fat.

If you (or your mom) paid for the guitar that you traded in, then you (or your mom) paid for the Chibson.

I get what you mean and agree, of course, that counterfeiting is bad.

However, how do you feel about "this" particular situation, seeing how neither the shop nor the buyer were deceived? Both were aware it was a used fake, none payed too much for it or were expecting the guitar to be a real gibson.
I don't think buying a used fake is helping the counterfeiters pump out more fakes (I don't think more folks will seek out fakes from the OP's purchase).

All in all, while I completely agree that counterfeiting is a bad thing, this particular situation is a big shoulder shrugging one for me. I understand the premises making fake guitars bad (and, just for the record: I'd never buy or own one myself) and all but in this case I couldn't care much. Kid is happy with a used guitar... that's all fine with me.

If he had sought and bought the guitar new from a counterfeiter knowingly, my response and attitude would be quite different though.

Cheers Gilmour!

While the shop and GF weren't deceived or deceiving it was a used guitar and more than likely somebody was deceived. I feel that buying the copies, even used, perpetuates the problem.

If GF tries to sell it here unmodified , then I'll have a problem. But, til then, it's his. I personally would modify the headstock to make it clear that it's a fake.

If you (or your mom) paid for the guitar that you traded in, then you (or your mom) paid for the Chibson.

And when you buy something used, you're supporting its resale value.

Re: NGD: Gibson LP.. Nah, just kidding! A Chibson.

If any of you guys worked at Gibson and this guitar was taking food off your children's tables I could listen to some preaching. Until you get your dream job in Nashville just relax. This is one used guitar that is halfway around the world making a kid happy.I swear some of you would torture him given the choice.

Re: NGD: Gibson LP.. Nah, just kidding! A Chibson.

Despite the OP's insistence on not passing the fake off as a real Gibson, some people are still going to see it and think it's genuine. They'll form opinions about it and attribute them to the work of a company that had no part in building that instrument. Whether those opinions are positive or negative, they will be misdirected, and that's wrong.

For whatever it's worth, I don't approve of counterfeit guitars. It's as simple as that. People are obviously going to do whatever they want anyway, and I've said what I wanted to say about it.

Yep.

Re: NGD: Gibson LP.. Nah, just kidding! A Chibson.

Like I said, I don't care about the fact that he bought an LP copy. Buy all the ESP's, Burnies and Tokais that you want. But when a company that isn't Gibson puts "Gibson" on the headstock, it takes away from Gibson being able to control their own reputation with their own products. Putting out subpar Chibsons doesn't help Gibson's reputation.
