Visited my local SD dealer to collect a Basslines Active EQ that I had ordered. He was offering a deal on Hamer XT series guitars.

I knew that, late last year, the proprietor had agreed to buy up some end of line stock from the regional rep. What I had not appreciated was that he had rather more of them than the half dozen on display in the shop. Over forty, to be exact. He needed to start shifting a few of them.

Sooooooooo, after testing a few different items, I concluded that the basic Made In Indonesia instruments are tidy enough but that the ones with USA Duncans sounded rather better than the ones with budget pickups (including EMG-HZ!).

As a person with a selection of "homeless" pickups stashed away, the obvious thing to do was buy one of the more basic Hamers and Seymourize it myself. I plumped for the SPJ doublecut Junior-alike. Turned out that the pickup cavity is exactly the right depth to accept an STK-P1 P90 stack plus a slim strip of rubber padding.

Right now, I am experimenting with the wiring possibilities. As usual, parallel coil connection sounds slightly constipated. Series coil connection sounds kinda overblown. Single coil mode sounds like the real thing. I am currently mulling over whether to fit a DP3T on/on/on Tri-Sound mode switch or just leave the coils permanently in parallel but with a "spin-a-split" style trim pot to balance between partial hum-cancellation and true single coil P90 goodness.

Pics will follow once the wiring is finalised.
