NGD: Never thought i'd buy a "relic" strat (60's Road Worn?)

I recently been itching for a vintage styled 3 single coil Strat because i have WAY too many super Strats and humbucker guitars, I wanted something different. I've never really been interested in buying a new pre-relic'ed guitar, much less a mexican and for the price they go for, but I ended walking out the store with this thing after not being able to put it down for what was apparently over an hour. Didn't seem that long to me haha

Been kind of going from shop to shop, never really finding exactly what i was looking for. I eventually stumbled on the Mexican classic lacquer series and thought that was it, although admittedly more expensive than I ever thought I would pay for a Maxican strat. I tried a few and was seriously thinking about it, until I saw this white relic looking thing somewhere in the back and thought I'd give it a try ust because it was white, and i dig white Strats haha. After going back and forth between a few, I just kept comparing every one to that white one until I bit the bullet on it.

Acoustically it is very loud, very twangy, and it is quite light. Even compared to other 60s road worn Strats the general look and feel of the whole thing seemed different. The neck shape felt different, it's a 1 5/8" and kind of starts off a bit V shape and tapers off to a C towards the heel, and the fret job is more "rounded/smoothed". The sales guy didn't really seem to know much so i couldn't get much info from him, but it was sold as a "Road Worn 60s model" on the tag and came with US and Custom shop instructions package. Do they make them differently every time? Why would this one stand out more even compared to the American standards i put it up against at a few hundred dollars more.

Only thing i changed so far on it is remove the grime it had, it looked like someone had done an oil change before handing the thing. It was actually pretty gross to the touch. I might actually get some Tru-oil for the neck because i don't like how it looks too "white" on the back compared to the distressed everything else. Might ditch the mint pickguard for a parchment and stick some surfers in there, or maybe try CS69s, but for now i'm quite happy with it. Just messing around with it unplugged in my living room is loads of fun because it's so naturally loud.

Nice. Looks like the Hendrix strat that circled through the Duncan shop (in a video from long ago)

Sometimes the odd budget guitar is a nice one and comes off the production line with everything in the right tolerance, wood happens to be good pieces and it just all works.

What I've found is the difference between expensive guitars and budget guitars is I have to play about 3 expensive ones to find a good one and I have to play 7-10 budget ones to find a good one, but there is a good one at each price point. Sometimes you just get lucky and one of the first ones you pick up is the one.

Cool guitar! I personally love the Olympic white/mint guard look, classic early 60's Strat. That one looks great, very realistic. Through the full Surfer set in there (including the hotter Bridge) and have fun!

I think the wear just makes them a little more comfortable to play, especially the neck edges. Regarding the CS Tag, I wouldn't be surprised if the CS created the wear pattern and specs (everyone loves the CS V->C neck shape) for mass production.

In any case, enjoy!

Way cool, cool mint!

nice looking guitar! i like the white/mint look. im sure surfers would sound great in there if you wanted to swap the pups

I actually think many of the Mexican relics look more authentically worn than even the custom shop ones. The relic job on yours looks very natural, like a real old guitar.

Congratulations!

What's really gross is all the "relic" jobs people are doing on poly finished Squiers.

Great looking Strat, nice one.

I love my G&L Legacys, but these feel remarkably like my old 1960 Strat. They do a good job with them. Other than Antiquitys, wouldn't change a thing. My Strat's pickguard nearly turned lime green.

FYI you don't need to oil the back of the neck. It may feel like raw wood but it's definitely been sealed with poly. Yes, the necks on the road worn series are poly finished. The bodies are nitro.

The body is made of Alder.

I would do it for aesthetic and feel reasons more than the need to protect the wood.

While doing a string change i saw something that bothered me that i hadn't notice initially at the store. The fretboard seems to have been sanded a bit too aggressively in the corner of the frets, the wood actually goes bellow the fret on the edges of the fretboard. I thought it may have been a defect, so I took it back to the store. They so far seem to say that this is normal because it's a road worn, even though the tech agrees it could make an eventual re-fret risky. They won't accept refund or exchange because the guitar is "fine". Not sure what to think, to me it doesn't seem normal. Wouldn't the very thin left over wood under the fret break during the fret removal?

Re: NGD: Never thought i'd buy a "relic" strat (60's Road Worn?)

I got called by the manager of the store today. Seems they'll accept to exchange it for another one. They have one that is apparently identical, but sunburst and non-relic, a classic lacquer series 60s Strat. Looking up info online I found it and saw it has different pickups and "vintage styled frets" which I assume is those really thin and small frets. Pickups will be swapped so I don't really mind, but the small frets I'm not sure about. I liked the 6105s on the road worn. A non relic lacquered strat is appealing though.

I typically scallop or use big frets because I do a lot of heavy bending and vibrato on 11s and prefer not feeling the wood so much. I wonder if I should do the trade and refret or if it's something of an acquired taste and I'll get used to.

Re: NGD: Never thought i'd buy a "relic" strat (60's Road Worn?)

I have an MIM Standard Strat in Arctic White looking just like this one. I found that the standard medium frets wear out pretty fast. If you play it heavily it will need a refret in about 2 years maybe less. I've changed mine to Dunlop 6000 the largest on the planet. I'd do the exchange.

Beat-up White > Shiny New Sunburst...

I'm w/you on the vintage-style fretwire, tho, that & the vint radius are "usually" dealbreakers for me,unless the guitar rises above those in other ways,ie tone, feel, etc

Hope it gets sorted, mebbe get a 2nd opinion on the re-fret(White one)?

I ended up trading. The sunburst one was basically flawless, no gaps or flaws, and actually sounded better to me. I would've prefered another white one, never been a huge 3-tone sunburst fan but this one does look nice.

The other one turned out worse after the store tech messed with it. The neck shifted a bit and was causing the small E to be too close to the edge. The tech "fixed it" by sanding the pocket shoulder to be able to re-angle the neck, but it ended up looking kind of wonky with the bottom of the pocket sticking out. When I saw that I decided to go with the trade, and not have the tech touch the new one.
