NGD: Pawn shop save of a shred-stick

I was out visiting my father in Omaha, NE and we decided to do some guitar "hunting" as my wife refers to it as. We came across an awesome pawn store and found this awesome piece:

I have been looking for one of these for quite some time. Decent shape and original case to boot! Frets are in great shape just need a polish. It has a few dents/dings but for its age, its in pretty good shape. 2 of the pointy corners have minor chips but nothing serious. Needs new locking nut parts but overall its in great shape. Stock neck pickup and Dimebucker in the bridge (what was in it when i bought it). It is missing the rear trem and electronics cavity covers but i can probably find those and/or make replacements. After some thoughts and cleanup, this is what it looks like now

Conditioned the fretboard, put a black plastic tip on the pickup switch and installed a Vintage TB4J JB in the bridge and a Blues Saraceno Parallel Axis in the neck (should be an interesting experiment). I am going to use the Dimebucker for a different guitar most Likely. I will be taking it to my buddy for a setup at the end of the week.

Have any of you ever used the Blues Saraceno PATB3 as a neck pickup? Its fairly low output so it could be pretty cool.

Awesome find! I love Kellys. Seems all the pawn shops around here have junk at close to new prices.

Re: NGD: Pawn shop save of a shred-stick

That's a sweet Kelly, and it seems to be in great condition.
Since you asked about the patb3 as a neck pickup, I tried a Jackson rr not that long ago, which had a jb/patb3 set on it. The patb worked fine as a neck pickup, quite thick and warm. Not exceptionally fluid or cutting , less present and bright than a jazz, more than a 59. At least that's how I perceived it.

Hope that helps !

(For reference, the neck pups I use are the liquifire on an ibanez, 59 on a Jackson DK2, jazz on a Kelly , and EMG 85/81 on other Jacksons, all going through a single rectifier, which thickens everything.)

I think those are so cool! I'd want a Blue one, of course,

Except I don't play pointy guitars. :lmao: But if I did, I'd like those, in blue.

Re: NGD: Pawn shop save of a shred-stick

thanks for all the great responses folks! I will keep you posted on the progress. It will be going to the shop this friday for the setup and wiring issues taken care of. Looking forward to the results. I have never owned one of these so im pretty excited.

250 sticker?

Pretty nice for a decent axe with a pickup upgrade and a case

Is the Floyd a decent model or one of those suspicious rough looking difrerent-spec Jackson Licensed JT-6 things?

Re: NGD: Pawn shop save of a shred-stick

Lately I have been lusting after an explorer type guitar. Funny too, because up until now they really appealed to me.

Congrats on your find! Great price too.

Re: NGD: Pawn shop save of a shred-stick

Talked him down to $250 from an original sticker of $280 and they accepted the offer. Very happy to say the least

Yea, it came with the Dimebucker, which I will use for another project.

The floyd is a JT-580 i believe is the model number. Its a floyd licensed made by Takeuchi (sp) i believe. Seems like a decent trem but i may upgrade down the road.

While I like the value and the purchase
That headstock is jacked up

The high e comes off the nut at an extreme angle
I'm sure you get many happy memories from playing it

Congratulations

I’m not seeing it? Which pic are you looking at?

Are you talking about from the tuning peg to the nut or from the nut to the bridge?

Re: NGD: Pawn shop save of a shred-stick

That's an awesome deal IMO, Congrats again.

Looks pretty normal for Jacksons to me

Yes that's the picture
It is normal for a Jackson
And that's what I'm on about

Guess I'm not into the hockey stick headstock
