NGD! Strat

Following on from my last post...

So went for a bit of a curveball in the end - ended up buying a Squier Classic 60’s vibe Strat. Link is below, will try to get pictures of th actual guitar shortly but getting phots on here is a nightmare.

Long story short - after trying some strats out in the store, this was recommended as an afterthought by the salesman and I really liked it. As well as loving the colour etc, it plays really well and sounds awesome for the price. It also comes in at less than half of some of the others I was looking at so much better for my budget and fine for what I was after!

I’d also heard and read really good things about them anyway, and I wasn’t really fussed about the Fender logo - I just wanted a nice strat that I thought played well.

The fingerboard radius is a 9 rather than a 7 (like some of the MIMs) as well which is a nice touch and it plays really well.

Thanks for the advice however, I think this is a good place to start for now - maybe in a few years if I feel I deserve it I’ll treat myself to a higher end model!

Re: NGD! Strat

The classic vibes are great, and like you said, with some more modern appointments (like the fretboard radius).

Re: NGD! Strat

Squiers and all sorts of cheaper guitars seem to be getting better and better. I say play the hell out of it and enjoy it!

I've only been playing since around 2000, but it's amazing how far the low end has come since then. When I started it wasn't unusual to pay more than that for a guitar that wasn't as good, I definitely did. I only really played it for a couple months before I bought something better on the used market.

Congrats!
I almost got the burgundy mist one before deciding on the MIM Classic 50s.
Those CV60s have nice pickups, little bright, but I really like them.

Re: NGD! Strat

CV 60's are great guitars! I've been playing one for 8 years now and haven't felt any need to "upgrade". (Though I've modded mine quite heavily to make it suit myself. My entry in that modding contest...)

Got it quite the same way as you: I was bying my first electric and tried couple of lower end Squiers, that didn't feel very good. Salesman run out of options, so he brought in the new CV 60 they happened to have in the back. It was somewhat above the budget I had, even with discount, but it felt that good I ended up bying it anyway.

Neck coating is a bit thick and stiff in them. Sanding the gloss from the back of neck makes it way smoother to play. Another improvement to consider would be to switch for heavier trem block.

I started in the early 90’s. At the time, $350 was about the average for a decent, playable guitar. Of course, that would buy a new MIM Fender. Not to go off topic, but it’s impressive they’ve only gone up to $550 in 25 years.

Re: NGD! Strat

This is the model I recommend the most for those wanting a great inexpensive instrument. It is a great time to be a guitarist, indeed.

Re: NGD! Strat

No doubt

When I started playing anything I could afford was unplayable
There was a Kendricks guitar I remember fondly though

Skinny late 70s shredder

Re: NGD! Strat

I started playing ~99 or so and remember Squiers seeming like a mess- cm thick finishes, plywood, terrible fretwork. Nowadays a Bullet or Affinity feels a lot more like a "real" guitar and anything above Standard/VM is comparable to MIM.

Re: NGD! Strat

Great looking guitar and I must say I love Squier guitars myself and are great for modding if you're not satisfied with the pick ups, electronics, etc. Congrats!
