NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

Ok so I traded my Epiphone resonator for this as I don't play acoustic much anymore and after tighting the input jack this guitar is AMAZING.. the sound is clear but full and loves my stacking of fuzzes and dirt pedals. The neck is tinted nicely and plays like a dream and the body resonates like my Classic Vibe Tele Custom.. Overall an amazing guitar for the price and I think this may become my main guitar for its nice beefy but clear sound!

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

Beefy yet clear is a pretty good summary of the original CBS era Fender Telecaster Deluxe model. Obviously, no standard modern humbucker is going to capture the qualities of an original Fender Wide Range pickup but the essence is there. Enjoy.

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

yeah it sounds great, plays great and resonates and vibrates like a well constructed guitar should. I'm getting more and more impressed with Squiers stuff since they came out with the Classic Vibes

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

I love my Vintage Modified. I've been thinking about trying to track down a deal on one of those models as well. They make good stuff!

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

I was just playing it acoustically. You have to try it if you are a tele fan or widerange humbucker fan... it has such a nice "right" feel to it, feels like a true instrument not like some junk like some guitars feel like which is surprising considering the price of this guitar :bigok:

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

How do the wide ranges compare to single coils (assuming you have teles are are well versed in them). Thinking about a new tele (probably semi hollow) in the sorta future and not sure whether to go the Cabronita style (Filtertrons), Deluxe style (Wide Ranges) or Dynasonics. I love the new Squier stuff much better then the standard mexican stuff in my opinion and much better then similar priced stuff like the lower to mid end Epiphones build quality wise (although it is easier to build a fender then a les paul I guess). Love my Jaguar although I want to upgrade the hardware (but thats usually a problem anyway on a Jag) and really want a Mustang.

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

Wow rereading my post I sound jacked up on all kinds of stuff. Main point being these new Squiers are great value and that I'd like to know where wide ranges fit in the scheme of things as pickups for telecasters.

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

haha no worries James !

The wide range humbuckers are very nice on these models. Compared to a standard tele they still have that character just rounder and beefier. They for sure don't sound like regular humbuckers they sound much more open and clear and the middle position with the toggle gives you that classic tele chime. I'm very impressed with the pickups, I was told by someone that the pickups (which say Fender on the front) are the same pickups used on the MIM Classic series 72 Tele deluxe.

Dude, that is on my short list of sexy guitars I must own in the near future.

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

You gotta try one !! I was expecting it to be just ok and use it as a backup guitar or downtuned guitar but it feels an sounds so good it's become my main axe.. Honeymoon stage I know but I'm LOVING it and the price can't be beat.

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

Nice score. And its always cool to be able to trade something that you aren't using. :bigthumb:

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

here is a quick demo of the guitar through my rig, used a Roland Blues Cube 30 instead of my Mesa...

I did not realize I bob my head so much haha I downtune near the end of the video with the whammy 1 full step and kick on my EHX hot tubes for some extra sizzle

I just picked up a 72 style thinline on clearance at my local GC and the pickups sound pretty much the same as you describe. The only difference is that the middle position doesn't have the same bite as either the neck or bridge positions. For me, that position isn't really all that useful. Fortunately, the other two positions more than make up for it. I just need to knock some of the finish off the neck with some steel wool and this thing is going to be really comfortable.

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

I LOVE the look of those thinlines... Post some pics if you got em !

The widerange humbuckers are unlike anything I have played (p-90s,Mini Humbuckers, PAFs,high output humbuckers, Single coils) they retain that tele character but add more thickness to it, I'm a new big fan of WRHBs

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

I'd hate to spoil all the love for the wide range pickups but actually those fender reissue wide range humbuckers aren't the real deal. They're just standard humbuckers. They have a bar magnet unlike the original wide range humbuckers which had individual threaded magnets.

They are also standard humbucker sized, the rest of the empty space in the covers is just wax.

There's this post on the Creamery blog that details the differences and I think a review of the '72 telecaster custom in total guitar magazine touched on this. Here's the blog post, you can see clearly how different they are:

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

what about the Vintage modified Squier Tele deluxe ? same as the MIM Fenders in terms of it being not a true Wide Range humbucker? Regardless it sounds great!

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

Yes, the wide range humbuckers used are the same. You might want consider upgrading but a set of wide range humbuckers will cost practically the same as the whole guitar. If you like the tone though, stick with it.

Re: NGD VM Telecaster Deluxe

yeah I was looking at the lollars for just the bridge so 100 bucks plus tax and shipping and then probably 50 for the shop to install it. the neck pickup I rarely use cept when I'm just noodling around some bluesier stuff. To be honest I love the stock humbuckers in this VM Tele deluxe now so I'm probably goanna stick with it, who knows I might hate the sound of a real wide range humbucker.
