Snagged this sweet Epi Les Paul today traded a bunch of pedals I wasn't using anymore... 8, mostly Chinese clones and a couple of more valuable ones.

I've been trying to find out more about it. It is apparently considered a Plus Top, but I can't seem to find specs for anything but the Plus Top Pro. I know it's not a Plus Pro because it doesn't have the foil splits.

I'm especially trying to find out what pickups are in it. They aren't horrible but will eventually come out. I'm considering a Slash set, but the stock pickups actually sound nice.

Decent quality tuners too. I think this guitar is a great platform for customization. I see a tusqu nut in the near future.

HNGD! I like the faded blueburst, very blue-jeansy. I say, get the stock sound in your ear, find out how you might want to tweak it before you start pickup shopping.

Man, what's with all the beautiful LP's coming out of the woodwork lately, now that I've decided to get rid of mine?
What's the back of that one look like?

Re: NGD

Your guitar looks really nice and the blue flamed maple top looks gorgeous. I own an Epi LP Standard with a TUSQ nut I installed and it widened the string spacing a bit which I like. I had to sand both edges just a little so the nut would fit perfect. I believe it improves the sound. The stock pickups sound very Led Zeppiliny to me...like that PAF tone to it if you set the pickup height properly. Epiphone makes some really nice guitars that are real players. I can testify to that.

I find the sound direct to my Egnator Rebel 30 is very big and full. It sounds like the speakers are about to blow up and take the tubes with them. Of what I can figure out this is the Epiphone version of the Gibson 490/489 pickups.

I'd like more clarity, but hotter than vintage without going into Dimebucker territory.

Funny you use the Blue Jeans description. I said the same thing to my wife last night.

Re: NGD

the Pro in the description probably means it has the newer Probucker pickups

my florentine with them

I like them they are supposed to be based of the burst buckers I believe

Re: NGD

Beautiful guitar. Black on the back adds to it. The white covers and pickguard don't add much. I'd go with black eventually. Congratulations.

Re: NGD

That's a sweet finish. I like blue guitars, have a couple of 'em. Epiphones are great for upgrading- they offer a pretty broad variety of different models, you get a lot of guitar for your money, and the build quality is usually very good. As with any brand of course, there are occasional exceptions- IMO they're no more common among Epis than they are among Gibsons that cost five times as much.

Since it doesn't have coil splitting, I think yours probably has the Epi standard Alnico Classic humbuckers. You can tell by checking the DCR on the bridge pickup, if it's 14K then they're Alnico Classics. The Probuckers use A2 mags and yes, they're modeled after Burstbuckers- I think a Probucker III bridge should read around 8.75K or so.

The regular Alnico Classics actually aren't half bad nowadays. Serviceable though not stellar, maybe a bit dull in a dark sounding guitar. I have a couple sets, two in korinas (Firebird and Explorer) and one in a regular mahogany Firebird. I believe Epi improved them around '010, prior to that they were really not great. People used to call them mudbuckers. I've had no luck finding information about whatever changes were made.
