Nice SSL-1 Comment from John Frusciante

Re: Nice SSL-1 Comment from John Frusciante

Would a set of ssl-1's get you closer to the ballpark for hendrix clean tones (little wing, wind cries mary etc?) than stock fender pups?
or is there a better option?

IMHO the SSL-1 are the best option for Hendrix tones unless you want to throw a ton of money at some actual vintage stock Fender pups from the 60's

As much as I do love the SSL-1, there are a couple better options.

Go with a set of three Antiquity Surfer necks for authenticity. http://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/antiquity-ii-surfer-strat-neck

Or a set of Fender '69s. http://www.fender.com/parts/pickups...-strat-pickups/0992114000.html#sz=12&start=13

Re: Nice SSL-1 Comment from John Frusciante

I think a lot of guys would be better served by the flat magnet SSL-2. I have these in a couple of my G&L Legacys. (I have good wood, even at my age! ;) )

My newer Legacys use the CLF-100 pickups made by G&L, and they're right there too for great vintage tones.

I do have a couple of Legacys with the Texas Hot Antiquitys but they're a totally different animal.

The SSL-1 and -2 are not only great sounding pickups, but they are a great VALUE, too. Gotta love that.

I figure it's because Strats are contoured to be comfortable sitting or standing with the guitar high and the neck almost perpendicular to your body. I generally wear a little lower with the neck up so Gibsons seem to 'fit' me better.

Sounds like you need something like this:

Re: Nice SSL-1 Comment from John Frusciante

You know, I think I'm missing out on the Strat bandwagon. I find the guitars themselves uncomfortable but I do like the range of tones they have.

Agreed. I find Strat-shapes (incluing the Jackson Dinky/Soloist) uncomfortable after a while, but love the tonal variety of H-S-S, H-S-H, and even S-S-S. I just don't feel like they're made to be held closely. They don't hug you, and in return it's difficult to hug them. It always feels like I'm just shaking their hand.

The most comfortable guitars I have are my JacksonStars NASLs. They hug me close like they're a part of me, and are even more comfortable than the Warrior body.

If I could get either of those in H-S-S/H I'd be happy.

Re: Nice SSL-1 Comment from John Frusciante

It's funny you feel that way, because I find my strats even more comfortable than my PRSi, and I find PRS pretty comfortable. I can lose myself in a strat body not unlike a woman's body.

Maybe it's because my first guitar was a strat, and I've pretty much always had one or two around.

I'm curious about that too, I am still trying to figure out how I was a troll to him

Part of the job of being a troll is calling anyone who questions them a troll.

Re: Nice SSL-1 Comment from John Frusciante

My buddie recently spoke with MJ after his middle pickup,on one of his vintage Strat pickups gave up the ghost... well, MJ rewound the pickup for his, 60's Strat.Everyone advised him to do this,in particular me , and this is what was the best thing ever to be done for this old Strat!

Fantastic! Thank you! There is so much love in this rewind , that it's not really quantifiable in terms of dollars. Thanks again.

One day, maybe a hundred years from now when we are all gone, they will open up this old Strat and see the rewound Duncan custom shop pickup there, and say" its all good"!

Much more likely is they will open it and say "Its a non original pickup drop $10,000 from the asking price, bin the unoriginal one and try to find a vintage replacement"

Far more likely is they will find it in 100 years and say "What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it gives forth a sound. It's got wires that vibrate, and give music. What can this thing be that I've found?" :D
