Re: Nine Inch Nails

I'm not sure about the pups..but with a trent reznor (sp?), i think you're destined to start a NIN-style band :)

Re: Nine Inch Nails

Previous to The Downward Spiral album Trent Reznor played primarily two guitars; a Jackson that was custom made with "the loudest pickups you put in it" and Gibson Explorers. The Explorers were used on tour and took a bit of hammering during the touring around the "broken" era. Rumor has it that Trent started to favor these after Al Jourgenssen from Ministry introduced him to them.

At the beginning of the Downward Spiral tour Reznor wasn't playing guitar and most duties were handled by Robin Finck who played a Gibson Goldtop Les Paul Standard (I think it was a Standard). The other guitarist (I believe it was Danny Lohner) played a PRS McCarty with the trem duct-taped to the body. Shortly after Reznor was playing Les Paul Standards, which many incurred the wrath that became of the previously mentioned Explorers.

For live use he was using a Line 6 AX212, one of the very early models from that company. But I believe that was probably Downward Spiral era.

Lately I know of from a Studio shot he had a very wde range of guitars at his disposal. Two notables were a Parker Fly and a Strat.

The key to getting that early NIN sound is to remember one thing; no amp. Often times he would just plug in to the soundboard from a Zoom unit (505 I think) and there would never be an amp. The tracks were also heavily processed after the fact as well.

I had a Digitech GSP4 that did a decent pass at the Pretty Hate Machine sounds; it nailed that opening riff to "Sin".

Good luck with it....
