no longer a Bogner Fan

I have to change my username, too.

Uber blows fuses, causes tubes to glow bright orange, capacitors blow, takes out new tubes, and things melt inside that are too close to the power light. According to Bogner Amplification. Sure tube amps are problematic; part of the game. But for a $2700 amp, I would have appreciated more than a day's troubleshooting while it was at the hospital. They looked at it this week; it's already back from the hospital.

So I got my Uber back from St. Bogner's Memorial in Hollywood yesterday. My 6505 loaner amp sounds better in every way. The Uber is buzzy like a jar of bees, even with the gain knob on 4, or anywhere, it's anemic, the cleans make annoying, non-subtle clicking sounds. Old reliable, the 6505, wins, at cleans, at crunch, at fluid leads and metal rhythms. It sounds "right"--the Uber does not. I've had enough. I'm not sure it would beat the Peavey even if it sounded like it is supposed to sound. An older green light model might, I don't know/care.

Ecstasys don't sound like they used to either. My very-early white chassis was a science project inside, but it had more balls than anything else ever. It has blown up for the new owner 3 or 4 times. Yes, the new ones have the 3-D cleans and imitate the best Marshalls well, but I find them raspy in all other respects. At least, raspier than a $3000 amp should be. Every Ecstasy owner I've met has had problems with theirs.

I played an Alchemist the other day. You can have it. I guess if you want a Bassman, you'd like it. I can see where a blues/jazz person would like it, especially for the delay, verb, and price.

The Shivas are nice. I like my Uberkab.

I'm not exactly knocking Bogner amps. I just find they can no longer support themselves. Per capita, they seem to be more problematic than most brands. And amps a third the price (JSX, XXX, 6505, Classic) compete with them just fine. The 6505 is comfy, and compared to a Hot Rod 50 and an Avenger, sounds better to me.

For me, they are not economical. Nor are VHTs or Soldanos, at least all the ones I've nearly purchased. All overpriced and overrated. Although some of them sound good, sure. For $3000+ they had goldurned well better sound good. At least as good a $900 brand new Peavey, which are cheaper than the amps with which they compete because Hartley Peavey runs a good business, invests in automation, process improvements. Not because they are inferior. Death to hype, both pro and con.

...And Peaveys don't break.

Laugh if you want; PVFan it is.

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

My first reaction was WHAT! But then I read your post in it's entirety and I can completely understand.

One Question; Why not BoogieMan? I am in love with my old-ass boogie, and Jim the V.P. is a hard working, very inventive guy.

AHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hit back once and what do I see?

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

I played through a Peavey Valve King a few days ago and was pleasantly impressed by it.

I played though a Line 6 tube amp that advertised a Bogner tube section design, and couldn't get a playable sound out of it after 5 minutes of tweaking. Granted, some of that was due to the interface, some due to the control layout, but c'mon...I just wanted to plug in and play, not program ****.

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

I've honestly never been thrilled with any Bogner amp.

The Ecstasy is a great rock amp, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't fit my style at all. Not enough gain and not aggressive enough.

The Überschall is just... there's a reason they call it the uber-saw. It's buzzy as hell, and I'm no stranger to buzzy; I play 5150's!

The rest of them might be cool, but they XTC and Uberschall are the 'high gain' heads they make. For the price of an XTC, give my a 5150, a Dual Rectifier, a JSX, and a Boogie cabinet!

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

Considering the Ubershall was supposed to be Bogners take on the Dual Rectifier.... I've always wondered why not just get a Dual Rectifier and be done with it?

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

My take on bogner:

When they are cranked, and the power tubes are cookin right, the sound is pure bliss.

My problem was: I could never find a venue that would ALLOW me to turn up THAT loud.

So Bognerfan is saying --------------- Peavey > Bogner!

Man that's sure to stir up a hornets nest LOL.

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

As far as high gain tube guitar amps go, in the cold light of harsh reality, not much can compare to a good Peavey. I mean for actual practical considerations - good tone, reliability and consistency, and price.

You can beat the tone if you want to pay 3* as much and sacrifice the reliability/consistency.

You can beat the price if you sacrifice tone, reliability and consistency.

You cannot beat the reliability and consistency for any price.

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

Gearjoneser's used his white chassis 101B as his main gigging amp for 10 years or so and only recently had to take it in for maintenance...

Hey... if it's not for you, it's not for you. Ain't nothing wrong with going down a price class to get what you want. Peaveys are great amps, I love the Classic 30s and 50s and when I used VK's 5150 for recording leads it was great to work with.

As for me, my Ecstasy is all I've ever wanted in an amp, and on the RARE chance I decide I want something different, I can sell it and still get a great amp or three for the cash it will bring. Although I really couldn't picture myself being happier with any other amp right now.

Ya know, I think many people can agree with that for the most part. Peavey makes some really good amps and the 5150 series is a great amplifier without a doubt. Some may not like them that much, but they consistantly suprise and impress me. For the money invested, they are great amps.

I can say the same thing. Not one problem in 10 years. If the new ones sounded like that one did, I'd probably have one.

Certain Bogner cleans are hard to beat. The XTCs are probably the most versatile good-sounding amps out there. I will concede those two points.

So Bognerfan is saying --------------- Peavey > Bogner!

All things considered, reliability, customer service, price? I think so. Especially when you can cover 95% of the same sounds. To me it's not worth the extra $$$ to have that other 5%.

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

Since I'm waiting on my Alchemist, I can say I'm shocked with BognerFans comments. Up to this post, I've held Bogners in the highest regard. Still, I do appreciate your thoughts and I will make sure I'm 100% satisfied the Alchemist when I try it out...I'll also make sure the warranty is all good. Can you tell us how often and what kinda gigs you play? I do know one guy here who uses a XTC and told me his tubes blew, had it serviced and it was'nt quite right...

Re: no longer a Bogner Fan

just a counter point, ive got a 5150 combo that was new in like 96-97, and its had a couple of problems in the last 18months or so. couple of $10 parts have failed, easy fixes.

the amp actually comes right apart, and the layout is really really clean.

not saying either one is good or bad, just saying we both know the amp repair guy

Right?? I own a 5150 myself and thought that this is just crazy too, especially when he said the cleans on his 6505 sounded better to him than the Bogner!!
