No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

I love Caparisons. Aren't all the high end models made in Japan though? It's a Japanese company just like Ibanez, so the master builders or whatnot are over there.

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

It says it's made in Japan on the control plate, probably still has a commanding price.

Is that a 25.5" scale? The 24.75" scale is what I don't usually like about Gibson style guitars.

Japan prices are much better... Just look at Gretsches 6000 series prices...

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

Hmm, never say never...

I have played some very nice Gibson Les Pauls and some that were not as great as others. Same with Charvels, Fenders, Martins, Taylors, Jacksons, Ibanezes (plural form?), etc... To each his/her own but personally I would stay away from a blanket statement, you may miss out on a totally awesome guitar with such an absolute ideology.

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

life would be bleak without any variety too.

Variety and choices are great, I grew up in the hippie days. Certainly not saying everyone should have an LP, anymore than everyone should have a Strat. One of the reasons I don't own a Strat anymore is that when I go to hear live music, I see them more than any other guitar model, sometimes more than all the other models put together at an all-day festival. I really like what some guys do with theirs, but it's too much of a uniform for me to wear.

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

There's still nothing like an LP. For some of us, no alternative can take their place.

A big thing for me is that most HHs, like PRS or Schecter, or a million others that aim to land somewhere between a Les Paul and a Strat, usually have a design that's either lighter in weight, or at least less substantial in feel, than either a Les Paul or a Strat, because they want to make their guitar "slick", which mean more dramatic cutaways for fret access, a lot wood carved away from the top, or making it lighter on purpose for the sake of comfort. Those qualities might seem beneficial, on paper and in practice, but it's somehow never a surprise when find yourself back to drinking good old Coca Cola once again. The benefits to those "improved" design points are often obvious, but the drawbacks often are not.

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

The fact that it's double-cutaway with 24 frets and an ebony board all but guarantees it won't sound like a Les Paul.

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

That Caparison is really nice for sure, i'm just not wild about the inlays.

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

Who needs a Les Paul or a PRS anyway? Strats are where it's at...

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

If you like to follow the crowd.

The Strat is the ultimate players guitar. You can literally do anything you want to a Strat with ease. Want 3 humbuckers? Get an HHH pick guard. Don't like the neck? Buy a new one and install it yourself!

Personally, I spent a ton of money modding guitars before I started working with a local luthier on building what I wanted. I may be too simplistic, but I think o things from a Tremolo vs. Non-Tremolo guitar. When you build your own guitar you can get a set neck or a bolt on neck, a Gibson scale or a Fender scale, humbucker vs dual Humbucker vs SSS vs HSS, ect.

Again, maybe I'm too simplistic or backwards on my thinking...but I just don't see it as a Les Payl vs Strat mentality...

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

So you have a clip of EVH with his strat and a LP with the same pickup in it and with the same amp settings??

Cos if you don't then there's no proof of this.

Re: No more PRS/Les Pauls for me!

Tell that to EVH.

Please, explain what this means.

EVH used Gibson humbuckers in his Strat...he wanted the Les Paul sound with a Strat vibrato

Thank you. My post was a little tongue in cheek. I know EVH didn't get his guitar to sound EXACTLY like a Les Paul, and nobody ever will. My point was, if you only had a SSS Strat and a LP Standard to play Van Halen songs with, and you wanted to sound as close to the recorded tone as you could (minus the vibrato use), you'd use the Les Paul, and not the Strat.

Most welcome! My dad was huge Charvel guy so growing up using Charvels. Doing research on them I stumbled across this article that I thought was interesting because at the time they weren't any super strats. Interesting interview

Wow! He kinda slams Seymour in that interview:

Yeah. And also, him selling it and advertising, makes it seem to the fans that I’m selling myself. They don’t know that I’m against it. They think that I’m out for the bucks. That’s not it at all. So it’s kind of a drag. There’s another guy too . . . . See, I’ve rewound my own pickups before, and a guy named Seymour Duncan – you probably know him – I I got pissed at him too. He called me up and said, “Can we use your name for a special pickup?” And I said no. Next time I pick up Guitar Player magazine, there’s a special Van Halen model customized Duncan pickup. So I called him up and said, “What the hell’s goin’ on?” So he stopped, finally. It’s just kind of weird, you know.
