No verb or delay??

Re: No verb or delay??

I use a touch of reverb maybe about 20 - 30% of the time, usally without distortion. Reverb is from the tank in my Blues Jr., or a TC Hall of Fame. I use mid-to-long delay only if the song calls for it, but rarely use short delays or modulation because things can get muddy right quick - we call that "Dirty Water" where I come from.

I like the contrast of returning to a "dry" overdriven sound after a few tunes with clean reverb.

Re: No verb or delay??

I barely ever use delay, don't own a reverb pedal. I do always have a little bit of spring reverb dialed in on the amp though, enough so you just barely notice it. It makes everything sound just a little bit bigger. That's the same way I use delay actually, just a real subtle slapback or a longer single echo that's not very loud. I use them to add dimension to the sound rather than as it's own effect.

Re: No verb or delay??

In fact, I just realised that exactly two thirds of my board at the minute is either reverb, delay or both (not counting the footswitch for my amp.)

Awesome. :D

Re: No verb or delay??

I keep the reverb level on my amp at 9:00. Now that I think of it, that's where the level is on my Carbon Copy Delay as well. Very subtle. I keep the reverb on at all times and only kick in the delay for a little color to a few solos. Eric Johnson delay fiend I am not.

Re: No verb or delay??

I have a delay on my board but it gets used very sparingly in one or two places in my cover band's set. I could happily live without it. Playing in a band context I like the simple clarity of no delay, no reverb.

Practising at home a touch of reverb warms things up a bit.

Re: No verb or delay??

I have a Corned Beef set so it sounds more like a slap back into the Bassman. It's very subtle, hard to tell it's on in a band situation.

Re: No verb or delay??

I use delay, one analog for leads, and a tap tempo delay for some rhythm. Since we are a two guitar band, I like to have the tap tempo although I doubt the audience ever notices. I also don't use reverb. We are a two guitar band, and don't see a need for reverb, not even leads!

Re: No verb or delay??

i find the longer i play the less i use... no pedals, no reverb, the gain is going away too... especially if i'm playing loud i find the room "reverb" gets the job done

Re: No verb or delay??

I have a DD-3 I use for stuff like Kam described, washouts, occasional lead-ish stuff, and clean echo. I'd still like an analog delay for variety, haven't found the right one yet. One amp has no verb, perpetually switched off on the other. 90% of the time I play completely dry.

Re: No verb or delay??

On my board at the minute, I have a Verbzilla, a Boss RV-3, a DD-20 and an EHX Memory Boy. For the style of music I normally play (spacey, post/noise-rock weirdness) it's usually important to have a couple of different options for textures and ambience. To be fair, it's mostly either just the Memory Boy or the RV-3. I mostly use the DD-20 for the looper and I hardly ever use the Verbzilla, despite it being a really awesome sounding pedal. I'm actually considering selling it to make room on my board for my recent modulation cravings.

Let me know if you do end up wanting to sell the Verbzilla -- I've had an eye out for a used one for several months :)

Right now I use two delay pedals -- a memory man w/hazarai and a memory toy, and my amp reverb. The memory toy has a wonderfully easy to control self oscillation effect, and the modulation helps make vocal drones and ebow work sound slightly more full and rich. The memory man has a really cool reverse echo feature that I like, and sometimes I use the looper to lock in a drone and then use the delay knob to change the pitch. I almost always use at least a touch of amp reverb, but I only use the delays for specific sounds. For soundscapy ambient textured stuff they are kind of necessary.

Re: No verb or delay??

The more I look at other players boards and rigs I am simply blown away by the number of players I see with 2, 3 even 4 delay pedals and in many cases they also have reverb pedals and/or amp reverb.

I'm curious...do any of you guys play dry all or most of the time???

I know dry to some mean no effects at all but I'll let modulation, fuzz, wah, whatever else pass for this...I'm just asking about reverb and delay.

Anybody use none???

I play most of my rhythm work dry or with just a bit of Chorus & reverb. The Reverb I use comes from the amp. I generally use a Deluxe Reverb but on occasions I use either a Marshal, or Super Reverb. I only use Drive & Delay when needed. I like to use delay to just add a little air or ambiance to the overall sound.

On my home board I have two amps. A Komet & Bogner Shiva. The Shiva's effects loop adds a nice feel for the delay, the Komet does also but only when clean. If I add overdrive it gets a little busy due to it not having a loop.

Re: No verb or delay??

I'm just about to house a reverb up. You'll have to come try it. I doubt ill be keeping it after playing with my chorus boosts and those two pedals of yours I realised I prefer the sound of the amp straight up. Ill probably have the multiplex up for sale too whenever I finish that.

Re: No verb or delay??

If you put a gun to my head and forced me to keep only one pedal, it would be my Flashback X4. Delay is a must-have for me.

I don't use it in every song, maybe half of them, but it's easily my favourite effect.

Re: No verb or delay??

I use my Carbon Copy when I want to sound like I am playing on top of a volcano...and my jam room has sweet natural reverb.

Re: No verb or delay??

Got a CMATMODS Deeelay and a El Cap but I prefer to play with a dry sound most of the time when gigging. I only use them on a couple of songs, but I love messing around them at home.

Re: No verb or delay??

I can get along just fine without either but I do use reverb. It's always on. I just like how it adds some extra space to my sound. There are times when I bypass it on my amp and it's usually in venues where the natural reverb of the room is enough.

Re: No verb or delay??

95% of the time i have some verb on but its from my amp but as far as how much i use depends on the place im playing at an who im playing with an most of the time its just enough to make my guitar sound a lil bit fuller but sometimes I have to turn it off to get clarity and thats usually in a full band situation. Most times im the only guitar player in the set usually with a keyboardist or organist (sometimes both) a drummer an maybe a bass player every now an again but very rarely another guitarist. But when another one does show up im usually left playing rhythm because they dont kno how to play chords or only know how to play lead. Thats when I focus on trying to keep my sound an tone as far away from his as possible.

I feel that way about almost all of my pedals. I hope nobody ever puts a gun to my head and forces me to choose which pedal to pick.
