No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

I always had issues with the action in my Jackson Kelly JS32T.
Even set at stupid high it would have some buzz over the 12th fret.

The nut was all out of whack too, so I took it to a tech today for a general checkup and guess what: The neck is ****ing warped.
Granted, it's a cheapo and the tech says he can work the frets out a bit so that it's OK, but man.
It's a recently manufactured guitar so it probably came from factory like that. How did I miss that, no idea.

What can I say? That's it with MIC Jacksons for me. :gurmpy:
I'll have the tech do the nut and a quick fretwork for cheap, and it's going for sale inmediately.

There’s always Indonesia.

So, I guess that it's not just Gibson with qc problems. How many grand are you out?

I've not been impressed by lower end Jacksons. Lots of loose knobs, bad fretwork, etc. Their higher end imports are fantastic.

While lower end anything is going to be more risky, I do feel that Jackson is especially lax in that regard. For low end imports, I feel that PRS and Schecter still have decent quality control while manufacturing to tight price points.

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

It sounds like it's a cheap model anyway; it's entirely possible with fretwork and possibly heating/clamping, the guitar will play just fine.

The tech said he could remove all frets, rectify the neck and refret, for about $150.
If it was a guitar I valued, I'd have that done. But in a low-end Jackson, I'll pass.
I'm never ever buying a bottom tier guitar ever again. There's too many sweet deals in the $400-$600 to settle for **** like this.
Granted, this Jackson was the most impulsive of buys ever.

But both my Ibanez SZ guitars destroy the Jackson regarding tone, resonance, playability and dependability.
The gap feels like going from Squier to Fender.

I found an old MIJ Jackson in a pawn shop a while back for less than two bills. One of the best buys I've made. But I wouldn't get a new one at an MSRP of $200.

There’s certainly a buy-in level for Jackson.

Love my Slime Green (India) SLX Soloist. Maybe the best playing neck/fret job I own. Picked it up used for a bit over $200 iirc.

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

A little bit of a tangent, but if that tech was going to level and crown those new frets $150 seems like a great price for a refret!

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

Years ago. I owned a copy of a Harmony Strat style guitar ( $265 ) which unfortunately laid flat under my bed , in it's case, unstrung for a 5 year period...I restrung the guitar one day and went to practice. I always noticed buzzing I could never get rid of, no matter what I tried. I took it to my guitar teacher and played it for him...he looked at the guitar and said the neck was warped. ( not in Top to Bottom fashion but Side to Side, Left to Right ) I sent it into a shop and they strung the guitar using only the low E string criss-crossed in an X fashion over a 2nd Low E strung from the high E string position and tightened to standard pitch in hopes of pulling the neck straight again. Consequently, it didn't help anything...but I have learned.

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

Even cheaper guitars these days shouldn't need a refret from a warped neck. I understand it happens, but I don't know if I'd get another one any time soon.

Welcome to South America, where manual labor is crazy underpaid compared to Europe/USA! :D

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

I’m always suspicious of MIC instruments to be honest, my only experience with one was fine but I just buy Indonesian or Korean if I want something cheaper than US or EU made.

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

My three MIC guitars have all been really nice — an Ibanez jazz box, Fender and Squier Strats.

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

I won't critize MIC guitars. Both my MIC Epiphones kick inmense amounts of butt.

Re: No wonder I had setup issues with my Jackson...

The neck is warped.
But... didn't you check the neck before you decided to buy the guitar?

A warped neck is easily detected just by looking... unless I'm missing something here?

Also, don't blame it on it's MIC. I've seen my fair share of american-made, warped AND twisted necks in both the Fender and Gibson camps, specially vintage Fender from the '60s and '70s.
