noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

this just started. i unplugged the board (went from guitar to amp) and it sounded nice and clean....i plugged it back in (between guitar and amp, duh) and there was a slight static sound going on. is this a patch cord going bad?

i might have to trouble shoot this tomorrow.

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

Have you guitar tech do it.

One pedal at a time. Then two. Then three....

Also, you can find one that works, and swap patch cables.

Troubleshooting is tedious.

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

just start adding one pedal at a time from start to finish until the noise pops up...when you hear the noise ook at the last pedal you added...it's either that pedal or that cable...swap the cable for one oyu know is good then try it. If you still have noise it's the pedal, if not it's the cable...if it's the cable fix it or chunk it...if it's the pedal maybe a fresh battery, contact cleaner or cleaning the jacks will help...

the pedal board in question is one of these:
pedalboard1.jpg

which i think poses another problem.
this pedalboard, powers all the pedals. it could be one of those cords, or in the actual powerstrip..... yikes.

yah, its a beast. and heavy. its been fine for a few years, now the noise.....

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

thats a helluva pedal board you got there?!

Ahh...thats so much better!

Same rules apply...just start with the guitar and amp then add one pedal at a time...if you were to end up with noise with ALL the pedals or any one of them no matter which one or which cable it woudl be the board/power supply itself...however, I doubt that'll happen.

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

oops. i messed up with the photobucket link. i thought i fixed it before anyone sawer.

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

funny thing... the noise is gone. i wonder if i have dirty power in this building...?

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

that board should not be bothered by dirty power...

Sounds like you have a slightly bum cord...you know the type...the noise comes and goes...

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

well, its def. old/bad. its not working right. it has been in a few guitars and had heat put to it ..... a lot.

Re: noise in my pedal board.....how to diagnose?

Contact cleaner and q-tips might be your best friend here. If the patch cables don't get moved around a lot and stepped on and twisted like you main guitar cable does, the chances of it being a BAD patch cable are slim, but surface corrosion etc on the jacks/cables could be the culprit. I think you'll see some dirty q-tips here in the future.
