Non Gibson SG Alternatives

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

that jaydee one is hot! the lollar one is pertty nice as well, like the p-90s

esp/ltd make the viper, which is a killer guitar not only for metal, but rock as well......can get a pretty nice blues sound with it as well if u change the pups...

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

i guess esp? I dunno im not a huge fan of guitar copies, not saying they are abd guitars, but im just not into them

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

Don't know of any manufacturers, but that P-90 loaded SG makes me giddy about the P-90 SG I've got on order from Warmoth. Body should be here in a couple weeks.

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

ESP Viper in Sunburst is a real sexy looking guitar!

I dont like the vipers. I dont like the bolt on neck and one of the main points of SGs in my opinion is the easy access to ther high fretts that arent there with the viper. Plus there about 2 the weight. (well Im exagurating but they are heavier.)

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

I guess I should clarify that I've never played a Viper & I didn't know they were bolt-on....

For a little more, you can probably find a used Gibby & get the real thing!

The P-90 loaded SG on the Craig Lollar site is a beauty alright, but that $2500 price tag was a bit much for the old heart! :saeek:

I'm curious to hear how your Warmouth turns out, I noticed it was bolt-on.

Inquiring Owls want to know.

however with the fret thing, there are 25 frets, so you can access teh same numbed fret on a gibson as on the viper with the same ease

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

Not all Vipers are bolt ons, just the cheaper series. the ESP standard Viper
is neck-thru and has great access to the upper frets, not sure you have actually looked at where the lower horn meets the neck?

There build quality on the Japan models are among the best.
Alot better and more consistant then the "almighty" Gibsons. IMHO.

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

^^^^^^^^

as far as i know, yes....

however, i have played multiple vipers, and they all feel terrific, imo. i have played a sunburst 400 series viper and the quality was stunning, and that was just a medium level ltd...

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

Didn't the guitarist for Soundgarden (whose name escapes me) play that Guild SG copy?

Heh, I'm curious, too. I ordered the body with a contoured heel, so that should help. It'll also be a bit heavier than a Gibby SG @ 1-3/4" thick. Granted, they have to do that with a bolt on design. Don't hold you breath, though. By the time I order the neck, get the body from Warmoth, make my custom modifications to the body, get it painted, and assembled, it may be close to the first of the year. But I'll definatly keep ya'll abreast.

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

No, the LTD Viper 1000, 300 seriess and 400 series are all mohogany set necks.

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

and they all have 24 frets, not 25 (wtf?) like xerxes said. i have a viper-300 and i love it. other than the offset shape, its the perfect sg i think. i prefer the symetricalness of gibson sg's, but the thicker body and extra weight of the viper are way better than gibsons IMO.

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

Does it have to look exactly like an SG? If not, check out a used Hamer Studio...less than $700 on Ebay, and you don't need to worry about the neck snapping like a twig.

Cool beans. Who knows, I may try one meself (w/ P-90's).

RE: the guy from Soundgarden, his axe was a Guild S-100, as seen in puckboy99's post. I seem to remember those things were pretty good and very stable tuning wise.

Re: Non Gibson SG Alternatives

ooh bloody hell... i LOVE that red mahagony natural finish. it's THE color for an SG
