NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

I said screw it, I've already got the double creme SuperD laying around, might as well give it a go. Just ordered up a black & creme DiMarzio PAF for the neck. If they don't work out, it' money I've already spent on the SuperD, minimal expenditure on the PAF, and I'll be able to make a better decision down the road for higher dollar pups based on having the two extremes in the guitar (i.e. low output 59 in bridge vs. HO SuperD)

And Rid should be happy....ordered myself a PlexiTone too :D

yeesh.....I may just have to go buy my first KISS or Cheap Trick album....

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

And I recommend the first KISS album along with Destroyer, Love Gun, Hotter than Hell, Dressed to Kill, Alive is a must have....lol. Cheap Trick??? Live at Budakon, Dream Police....lol.

I am so damn jealous that you're getting a PlexiTone I could throw up. :gurmpy:
Dammit it sucks not being able to get this stuff.

I'd look at the Bill Lawrence L500-R and L500-L. The L is a little hotter than the R. In fact, call Becky and see what she recommends. Double cream L500's would look KILLER in that guitar. :fing2:

WORD!!!!! Anything else is just guitar pickup masterbation!!!!:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

My brother used to be a DJ and he had one KISS album....Rock & Roll Over, maybe? I think Calling Dr. Love is on it ? (thats about the only KISS song I like...of those I've heard anyway)

Well, I hope everything does what I need it (and not necc want) to. Meaning the pups and pedal. Once I get that sorted I'm set...no more major purchases other than a mic,maybe... and then can start selling off everything else.

Yup, that's Rock & Roll Over. Another great album. For a while there they averaged 2 album releases per year. One in spring and one in fall.

I hope for sake it does too. :D You must share the tones, bro. I gotta here that PlexiTone with that Hamer. Make a few clips with the 59's and it just for the heck of it. I wanna hear that. :D

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Whoa here fellas! I'm seeing Bill thrown around in this thread quite a bit. I admit. I'm one of the biggest Bill Lawrence fanboys on this forum, but I would NOT recommend Bills pickups for what Jeff says he's looking for.

You won't find a Bill Lawrence that even is remotely close to an overwound PAF style pickup. In fact, Bill has told me himself he doesn't care much for PAF style pickups and refuses to make one.

I can't personally give a recomendation on pickups, I'm not much of a PAF style fan myself. I do here that WCRs are quite nice, but pricey. I've heard great stuff about the GFS stuff on Ebay.

Sorry, I'm not much help, but I don't think going Bill Lawrences will quite give you what you are looking for and after that wait, you might be dissappointed.

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Good points, Brent. All I know is I love the dang things. I've really only played the L500-XL and the 280/290 single coils. As cool and awesome sounding as the XL is, it's too hot for my taste. I recommended them because they are so even sounding and will let the guitar sound as it is without any coloration.

Im glad somebody else said that...BL's ar about the LAST thing I would have thought about when looking for ANYTHING even CLOSE to a PAF!

Jeff...I know you ordered up a DiMarzio PAF to try out with the Super D but FWIW...if I were looking for a slightly hotter/modern PAF pickup set and was NOT gonna get Duncans I would go Rio Grande...Texas/BBQ.

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Thanks folks for the Lawrence info....

Christian....I came *this* close to ordering the Rio's yesterday as I found them for under $100 each in nickel covers...But I just felt I should try the SuperD I've got laying around. I know it's NOT a hot PAF style, but it does do crunchy tones I've always been a fan of (i.e. Adrian Smith and Ace..even though not a fan of KISS, always liked the guys tone).

If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. I plan on keeping this guitar for a long long time, so I can experiment a bit 'til I find what I want/like :)

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

I can almost guarantee you that if you played a Duncan SH5 custom, blindfolded, and someone told you it was Alnico, you'd love it. It sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

I've had a few of them actually. To my ears it's def ceramic..it's got a little of that compression/squish, and it *may* be a bit too bright/toppy for this guitar...if it was ALL mahogany or a darker soudning Paula, then def would try ....we'll see what happens with the SuperD...

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Sorry if this was covered but are '59's in there now what came stock?
